Flexform Timeless Chair – lounge chair with scissor frame

Antonio Citterio designed the Timeless for Flexform: a lounge chair with a scissor frame in chrome-plated steel. At the sides, the struts cross to form an X. The seat and back are formed by one continuous length of leather, stretched between the two sides of the frame and fixed to it at six points. Despite its open form, the chair is heavy and solidly built. Citterio has worked with Flexform since the 1970s, longer than any other designer at the company.

Timeless Chair in black leather

This Timeless Chair has a black leather sling on its chrome-plated frame. Black and chrome look clean and understated and go with dark wood as well as light walls. The chair works as a reading seat, as a counterpart to a sofa or as a stand-alone piece in a study. Add a floor lamp and a small side table and it becomes a reading corner of its own.

Seating comfort and space

The taut leather sling gives as you sit down and wraps around your body. You sit low and leaning back, as in a lounge armchair, lower than on a dining chair. That is comfortable for reading or resting, though getting up takes a little more momentum than from a high seat. The chair takes up around 0.7 × 0.7 m of floor space and looks light thanks to its open frame. Leave room in front of it for outstretched legs.

Elements and additions

The Timeless has no adjustable parts: the seating position comes solely from the scissor frame and the leather sling. It is often sold in pairs; two chairs facing a sofa or on either side of a side table form a classic seating group. The sling is a replaceable part: dealers also offer the chair newly covered, for example in cowhide.

Caring for leather and chrome

Remove dust from the leather with a soft, dry cloth and wipe it occasionally with a barely damp cloth. Once or twice a year, it benefits from a suitable leather care product. Keep the chair away from radiators and strong sunlight so that the leather does not dry out. Clean the chrome with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner, without abrasives, and then rub it dry.
