About the model

Flexform Groundpiece – a sofa with a generous seat depth

Antonio Citterio designed the Groundpiece for Flexform in 2001, rethinking the proportions of the sofa: deep, particularly low and loosely structured. The idea came from everyday life – on the sofa, people read, watch TV, work on a laptop and even eat. That is why the armrests can serve as cowhide consoles with room for plates or books. The elements are supported by metal frames with moulded polyurethane foam, topped with generous goose down cushions.

Groundpiece three-seater in grey fabric

This Groundpiece is a three-seater with a grey fabric cover. It consists of two parts, and its generous seat depth gives you room to lean back or lie across it. The low back keeps the room visually open, so the sofa also works free-standing in the room or in front of a window. Grey covers are easy to combine with other colours. It is one of a kind.

Seating comfort and space

Depth is the Groundpiece's trademark: the sofa is 1.2 m deep and gives you room to lean back or lie across it. The goose down back cushions give softly. At 44 cm, you sit within the usual range. The sofa needs 2.35 m of wall space and is only 70 cm high, so it also fits under a window. As a rule of thumb, leave 60 to 80 cm clear in front of it.

Elements and additions

On the Groundpiece, the armrests make the difference: upholstered in fabric with a metal or solid wood inner structure, or as a cowhide-covered metal console. The console serves as a surface for plates, books or a laptop. Low leather shelves can even replace part of the back. If you want to extend the sofa, Flexform still offers seat elements, footstools and cushions; orders are placed through authorised specialist retailers.

Caring for the fabric cover

Vacuum the fabric regularly with a soft upholstery nozzle so that no dust settles in the fibres. Soak up stains immediately with an absorbent cloth and dab from the outside inwards. The covers can be removed; the fabric's care instructions state whether it should be washed or dry-cleaned. Plump up loose cushions and swap their places from time to time so that they give evenly.

Why buy a pre-owned Flexform Groundpiece?

Flexform is a family business from Meda that is now run by the third generation. Antonio Citterio is the designer with the longest collaboration in the company's history. The cushions are loose, the covers are removable, and new covers are available from Flexform dealers. This means that a pre-owned Groundpiece can also be used for a long time. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Lightpiece and the Groundpiece?

Antonio Citterio designed the Lightpiece in 2002 as a lighter version. According to Flexform, it shares the stylistic DNA of the Groundpiece but stands on transparent methacrylate feet, which makes it look almost as if it is floating.

What parts make up the Groundpiece system?

Flexform offers seat elements in several widths and in depths of 97 or 122 cm, armrests, footstools – including versions with a backrest – and loose cushions in various sizes. These can be combined into straight sofas, corner sofas and larger seating landscapes.

How did the idea for the Groundpiece come about?

Antonio Citterio developed the sofa by observing everyday life: on the sofa, people read, watch TV, work on a laptop and eat. That is why the Groundpiece is deep and low, and the armrests serve as a surface for putting things down.

How do you care for the Groundpiece's down cushions?

Down gives way when you sit on it and forms hollows. Plump the cushions regularly so that the filling is evenly distributed again and the sofa keeps its shape. This is part of the normal care for down upholstery.

Can you order new covers for a Groundpiece?

According to Flexform, yes: you can get new covers for existing furniture through an authorised dealer. If you have them, bring along the product documents that came with the purchase. Spare parts and questions about the furniture are also handled by specialist retailers.

What are the support rolls on the Groundpiece for?

Flexform offers the goose down back cushions with or without a polyurethane foam support roll. The roll gives the soft down cushion more shape and your back more support. Cushions with a roll come in widths of 60, 80 and 100 cm.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
