Flexform Long Island 05 – down-filled sofa with set-back armrests

The Long Island 05 was created in 2005 by the Flexform Design Center, the company’s in-house design department. Its signature feature is the armrest: it is set slightly back behind the seat cushions. According to Flexform, this allows a particularly comfortable, relaxed posture. The frame is made of solid wood, padded with polyurethane foam and covered with a protective fabric; the feet remain concealed. The seat cushions are filled with sterilised goose down, with a core of shape-retaining material or foam with Dacron. The back cushions contain down and fibre.

This Long Island 05 is a two-seater upholstered in beige fabric. It comes with a square footstool measuring 100 × 100 cm. Pushed up to the seat, it extends the seating area so you can put your legs up; placed on its own, it serves as an extra seat or a footrest. The light beige has a calm effect and goes well with wood and warm tones. The set suits a living room or a generous reading corner.

Seating comfort and space

The down filling gives softly as you sit down, while the core of the cushion provides support. At 38 cm, the seat is lower than on most sofas, which measure 42 to 45 cm – you sit in a casual, rather reclined position. The sofa is 1.11 m deep; a cushion behind your back helps if you want to sit upright. The sofa takes up around 1.8 m of wall space and, with the footstool pushed in front, a good two metres of depth. Leave 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.

Elements and additions

Long Island 05 is a seating system. For it, Flexform makes sofas, end, corner and long corner elements, footstools and extra cushions in goose down. A distinctive element is the ‘Fit-in’: a removable backrest with a leather-covered metal frame that doubles as a shelf. The base accommodates narrow tray tables covered in cowhide. Flexform still makes the range, and elements and cushions can be added through specialist retailers.

Caring for the fabric cover

According to Flexform, the fabric covers of the Long Island 05 are removable. For a thorough clean, take them off and have them cleaned by a specialist. For everyday care, vacuuming with the upholstery nozzle is enough. Dab fresh stains with a damp cloth rather than rubbing them. Plump up the down cushions regularly so that the filling is evenly distributed. Direct sunlight causes light fabrics to fade.
