About the model

Flexform Lightpiece – a sofa on transparent feet

Antonio Citterio designed the Lightpiece for Flexform in 2002. According to Flexform, it shares the stylistic DNA of the Groundpiece but looks lighter: feet made of glossy, transparent methacrylate make the sofa seem almost to float. The frame is made of wood and metal with polyurethane padding. The seat cushions are filled with goose down over a shape-retaining insert or with foam and Dacron, and the back cushions with down. The Lightpiece is available as a stand-alone sofa and in corner and modular combinations.

Lightpiece three-seater in blue fabric

This Lightpiece is a three-seater with a blue fabric cover. The long, straight shape seats three people and leaves room to stretch out. With its low silhouette, the sofa barely blocks the view, so it fits in front of a window or free-standing in an open-plan living area. The blue looks calm and harmonises with white, grey and light wood. It is one of a kind.

Seating comfort and space

According to Flexform, the Lightpiece offers the same versatility and comfort as the Groundpiece. The back cushions are filled with goose down and give softly. With a seat height of 40 cm, you sit slightly lower than usual and in a more laid-back position. The backrest is only 56 cm high, which keeps the room feeling open. The sofa needs 2.88 m of wall space and 97 cm of depth; as a rule of thumb, leave 60 to 80 cm clear in front of it.

Elements and additions

On the Lightpiece, you have a choice of armrests. There is a metal shelf with a steel or leather frame, a leather shelf and an upholstered fabric armrest with a wooden frame. Flexform makes additional back cushions on request, and footstools and further seat elements are also part of the range. According to Flexform, new covers for existing furniture can be ordered through authorised dealers.

Caring for the fabric cover

The Lightpiece's covers are removable, in fabric as well as leather. To clean the fabric, follow its care instructions; if in doubt, leave it to a professional cleaner. For everyday care, vacuum the cover with a soft upholstery nozzle and dab stains without rubbing. Plump the down cushions regularly. Wipe the methacrylate feet with a soft, damp cloth, never with abrasive cleaners.

Why buy a pre-owned Flexform Lightpiece?

Flexform began in 1959 as a small craft workshop in Brianza and is now a third-generation family business, with its headquarters and factory in Meda. Flexform has been working with Antonio Citterio since the 1970s – the longest collaboration in the company's history. The Lightpiece is still in the range, and covers and cushions can be added through specialist retailers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Lightpiece and the Groundpiece?

According to Flexform, the Lightpiece shares the stylistic DNA of the Groundpiece but looks lighter. The main difference is the feet made of glossy, transparent methacrylate, which make the sofa seem almost to float above the floor.

What are the Lightpiece cushions filled with?

The seat cushions contain sterilised goose down with a shape-retaining insert, or polyurethane foam with Dacron. The back cushions are filled with goose down, optionally with a padded polyurethane support roll.

What are the Lightpiece's feet made of?

Glossy, transparent methacrylate, a crystal-clear plastic. The see-through feet make the sofa seem almost to float; the floor remains visible and the room feels more open.

Is the Lightpiece also available as a corner sofa?

Yes. Flexform offers the Lightpiece as a stand-alone sofa and in corner and modular combinations. The seat elements come in depths of 97 or 122 cm, along with footstools and cushions in several sizes.

Can you reorder back cushions for the Lightpiece?

Flexform makes additional back cushions on request. Like all Flexform products, they are ordered through an authorised dealer, where you can also get new covers for existing furniture.

What is it like to sit on the Lightpiece?

According to Flexform, the Lightpiece offers the same comfort as the Groundpiece. The down cushions at your back give softly, and depending on the version, the seat cushions have a shape-retaining core or a filling of foam and Dacron. You sit leaning back rather than upright.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
