About the model
Flexform Groundpiece – a sofa system with down cushions
The Groundpiece is a modular sofa that Antonio Citterio designed for Flexform in 2001. In 2016, Flexform called it the undisputed bestseller of its production. The elements have a metal frame with moulded foam, and the footstool has a solid wood frame. On top are seat cushions of goose down with a shape-retaining core, or of foam and Dacron. The armrests come upholstered or as a cowhide-covered metal console that serves as a surface for putting things down.
Groundpiece two-seater in grey fabric – floor model
This Groundpiece is a two-seater with a grey fabric cover in the quality LUNAR N. 320. It was on display and has never been used in a home. The sofa consists of two parts, and its generous seat depth gives two people plenty of room to lean back and put their feet up. The neutral grey can be combined with wood, light walls and colourful cushions. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
Depending on the version, the seat cushions are filled with goose down over a shape-retaining core or with foam and Dacron, and the back cushions with down. You sit softly and have plenty of room to lean back. At 44 cm, the seat height is within the usual range. The sofa needs 2.35 m of wall space and is 1.2 m deep – deeper than most sofas. As a rule of thumb, allow 60 to 80 cm of walkway in front of it.
Elements and additions
Groundpiece is a system. Flexform offers seat elements in several widths and in depths of 97 or 122 cm, along with armrests and footstools, also available with a cowhide back. Loose cushions range from 40 by 40 to 100 by 60 cm. Additional back cushions are available on request. The range is still in the catalogue. According to Flexform, new covers for existing furniture can be ordered through authorised dealers.
Caring for the fabric cover
Down gives way when you sit on it and forms hollows – that is part of the Groundpiece's character. So plump the cushions regularly and air them from time to time. Dab stains with a damp, light-coloured cloth, without rubbing. Because Flexform makes the covers removable, they can be taken off for thorough cleaning; follow the fabric's care label when doing so.
Why a Flexform Groundpiece floor model?
Flexform began in 1959 as a small workshop in Brianza and is still a family business today, with its headquarters and factory in Meda. A floor model has only been on display and never used in everyday life: the down cushions and fabric cover have never been exposed to use in a home. You get the Groundpiece just as it stood in the showroom and can add to it through Flexform specialist retailers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How did the idea for the Groundpiece come about?
Antonio Citterio developed the sofa by observing everyday life: on the sofa, people read, watch TV, work on a laptop and eat. That is why the Groundpiece is deep and low, and the armrests serve as a surface for putting things down.
What are the support rolls on the Groundpiece for?
Flexform offers the goose down back cushions with or without a polyurethane foam support roll. The roll gives the soft down cushion more shape and your back more support. Cushions with a roll come in widths of 60, 80 and 100 cm.
What is the Premium version of the Groundpiece?
In the Premium version, sterilised goose down lies over an insert of highly elastic, shape-retaining material. Flexform offers it for seat elements and footstools. The standard cushions have a shape-retaining insert or a filling of foam and Dacron.
Can the covers of the Groundpiece be removed?
Yes. Flexform makes the Groundpiece's covers removable, in both the fabric and the leather version. Fabric covers are best cleaned professionally so that they keep their precise fit.
What is the difference between the Lightpiece and the Groundpiece?
Antonio Citterio designed the Lightpiece in 2002 as a lighter version. According to Flexform, it shares the stylistic DNA of the Groundpiece but stands on transparent methacrylate feet, which makes it look almost as if it is floating.
What parts make up the Groundpiece system?
Flexform offers seat elements in several widths and in depths of 97 or 122 cm, armrests, footstools – including versions with a backrest – and loose cushions in various sizes. These can be combined into straight sofas, corner sofas and larger seating landscapes.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Flexform was founded in 1959 as a small workshop in Brianza near Milan and is now run by the third generation of the founding Galimberti family. Design and production take place in Meda, with suppliers within a few kilometres. Since the 1970s Antonio Citterio has designed much of the collection, including the Groundpiece of 2001: deep, notably low and with large down cushions. Pieces are made to order, with a wooden frame, elastic webbing tensioned by hand and foam padding of different densities.
