About the model
Flexform Groundpiece – a sofa for everyday life
The Groundpiece is a modular sofa that Antonio Citterio designed for Flexform in 2001. In 2016, Flexform called it the undisputed bestseller of its production. The elements have a metal frame with moulded foam, and the footstool has a solid wood frame. On top are seat cushions of goose down with a shape-retaining core, or of foam and Dacron. The armrests come upholstered or as a cowhide-covered metal console that serves as a surface for putting things down.
Groundpiece corner sofa in grey fabric
This Groundpiece is a corner sofa with a grey cover in the fabric ELISIR N.409; the corner is on the left, seen from the front. With three seats and deep seating surfaces, it suits a living room where people read, watch TV and lie down too. The corner section extends far into the room and offers space to stretch out. Grey stays in the background and lets rugs and cushions take centre stage. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
According to Flexform, the Groundpiece is deliberately deep and low: with a seat height of 40 cm, you sit slightly lower than usual and in a more relaxed position. The goose down back cushions give softly. The corner sofa measures 2.83 m across the front and extends 2.5 m into the room – so it needs a generous corner. The back height of 70 cm keeps the view open. As a rule of thumb, leave 60 to 80 cm of walkway in front of it.
Elements and additions
On the Groundpiece, the armrests make the difference: upholstered in fabric with a metal or solid wood inner structure, or as a cowhide-covered metal console. The console serves as a surface for plates, books or a laptop. Low leather shelves can even replace part of the back. If you want to extend the sofa, Flexform still offers seat elements, footstools and cushions; orders are placed through authorised specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
The Groundpiece's covers are removable, in fabric as well as leather. To clean the fabric, follow the care instructions for the specific quality; if in doubt, leave it to a professional cleaner so that the cover keeps its precise fit. For everyday care, vacuum the fabric with a soft upholstery nozzle. Shake and plump the down cushions regularly so that the filling is evenly distributed again.
Why buy a pre-owned Flexform Groundpiece?
Flexform is a family business from Meda that is now run by the third generation. Antonio Citterio is the designer with the longest collaboration in the company's history. The cushions are loose, the covers are removable, and new covers are available from Flexform dealers. This means that a pre-owned Groundpiece can also be used for a long time. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What parts make up the Groundpiece system?
Flexform offers seat elements in several widths and in depths of 97 or 122 cm, armrests, footstools – including versions with a backrest – and loose cushions in various sizes. These can be combined into straight sofas, corner sofas and larger seating landscapes.
What is inside the Groundpiece frame?
The seat elements have a metal frame padded with moulded foam and covered with a protective fabric. Footstools have a solid wood frame. The feet are made of powder-coated metal and stand on plastic caps.
How do you care for the Groundpiece's down cushions?
Down gives way when you sit on it and forms hollows. Plump the cushions regularly so that the filling is evenly distributed again and the sofa keeps its shape. This is part of the normal care for down upholstery.
How did the idea for the Groundpiece come about?
Antonio Citterio developed the sofa by observing everyday life: on the sofa, people read, watch TV, work on a laptop and eat. That is why the Groundpiece is deep and low, and the armrests serve as a surface for putting things down.
What are the support rolls on the Groundpiece for?
Flexform offers the goose down back cushions with or without a polyurethane foam support roll. The roll gives the soft down cushion more shape and your back more support. Cushions with a roll come in widths of 60, 80 and 100 cm.
Can you order new covers for a Groundpiece?
According to Flexform, yes: you can get new covers for existing furniture through an authorised dealer. If you have them, bring along the product documents that came with the purchase. Spare parts and questions about the furniture are also handled by specialist retailers.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Flexform was founded in 1959 as a small workshop in Brianza near Milan and is now run by the third generation of the founding Galimberti family. Design and production take place in Meda, with suppliers within a few kilometres. Since the 1970s Antonio Citterio has designed much of the collection, including the Groundpiece of 2001: deep, notably low and with large down cushions. Pieces are made to order, with a wooden frame, elastic webbing tensioned by hand and foam padding of different densities.
