About the model
Flexform Groundpiece – deep, low and modular
Antonio Citterio designed the Groundpiece for Flexform in 2001, rethinking the proportions of the sofa: deep, particularly low and loosely structured. The idea came from everyday life – on the sofa, people read, watch TV, work on a laptop and even eat. That is why the armrests can serve as cowhide consoles with room for plates or books. The elements are supported by metal frames with moulded polyurethane foam, topped with generous goose down cushions.
Groundpiece corner sofa in beige fabric
This Groundpiece is configured as a corner sofa; the corner is on the right, seen from the front. It is upholstered in the beige fabric ELISIR N.409, and the cushions are filled with down. It seats three, and you can stretch out on the long side. The light beige suits rooms with wood, linen and natural tones and makes the sofa look light despite its size. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
Flexform describes the Groundpiece as deep and particularly low. The down cushions give softly, while the shape-retaining core underneath keeps them in shape. With a seat height of 38 cm, you sit much lower than usual, relaxed and leaning back; getting up takes a little more effort. The corner sofa needs three metres along one wall and two metres along the other. The top of the back is just 70 cm high. As a rule of thumb, leave 60 to 80 cm clear in front of it.
Elements and additions
Groundpiece is a system. Flexform offers seat elements in several widths and in depths of 97 or 122 cm, along with armrests and footstools, also available with a cowhide back. Loose cushions range from 40 by 40 to 100 by 60 cm. Additional back cushions are available on request. The range is still in the catalogue. According to Flexform, new covers for existing furniture can be ordered through authorised dealers.
Caring for the fabric cover
The Groundpiece's covers are removable, in fabric as well as leather. To clean the fabric, follow the care instructions for the specific quality; if in doubt, leave it to a professional cleaner so that the cover keeps its precise fit. For everyday care, vacuum the fabric with a soft upholstery nozzle. Shake and plump the down cushions regularly so that the filling is evenly distributed again.
Why buy a pre-owned Flexform Groundpiece?
Flexform began in 1959 as a small workshop in Brianza, founded by the Galimberti brothers, and still has its headquarters and factory in Meda today. The family business has been working with Antonio Citterio since the 1970s. The Groundpiece has been in the range since 2001, and elements and covers are still available. Buying pre-owned, you get the same design with down cushions and removable covers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Groundpiece cushions filled with?
The seat cushions contain sterilised goose down over a core of shape-retaining material, or consist of polyurethane foam and Dacron. The back cushions are filled with goose down, with a foam support roll on request.
What armrests are available for the Groundpiece?
There are upholstered armrests with a fabric cover and a metal or solid wood inner structure, and metal armrests covered in cowhide. The latter are shaped like consoles and also serve as a surface for books or a cup, for example.
Can you order new covers for a Groundpiece?
According to Flexform, yes: you can get new covers for existing furniture through an authorised dealer. If you have them, bring along the product documents that came with the purchase. Spare parts and questions about the furniture are also handled by specialist retailers.
What is it like to sit on the Groundpiece?
Flexform describes the Groundpiece as deep and particularly low. The down cushions give softly, while the core of foam or shape-retaining material provides support. You sit back in a relaxed position and have plenty of room to stretch out.
What is the difference between the Lightpiece and the Groundpiece?
Antonio Citterio designed the Lightpiece in 2002 as a lighter version. According to Flexform, it shares the stylistic DNA of the Groundpiece but stands on transparent methacrylate feet, which makes it look almost as if it is floating.
What is inside the Groundpiece frame?
The seat elements have a metal frame padded with moulded foam and covered with a protective fabric. Footstools have a solid wood frame. The feet are made of powder-coated metal and stand on plastic caps.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Flexform was founded in 1959 as a small workshop in Brianza near Milan and is now run by the third generation of the founding Galimberti family. Design and production take place in Meda, with suppliers within a few kilometres. Since the 1970s Antonio Citterio has designed much of the collection, including the Groundpiece of 2001: deep, notably low and with large down cushions. Pieces are made to order, with a wooden frame, elastic webbing tensioned by hand and foam padding of different densities.
