About the model
Flexform Groundpiece – a corner sofa for large rooms
With the Groundpiece, Antonio Citterio designed a sofa for Flexform in 2001 that is geared to everyday life: a place for reading, working, watching TV and eating. According to Flexform, it made sitting on a sofa less formal. Deep seats, a particularly low line and large down cushions are part of this. Low cowhide shelves can be fitted into the structure, replacing part of the back or armrest. For Citterio, the secret of its timeless balance lies in austere leather and down cushions.
Groundpiece corner sofa in brown fabric
This Groundpiece is a large corner sofa with a brown fabric cover; the corner is on the right, seen from the front. It seats three, and the long sides also offer room to lie down. The corner shape defines an open living area and creates a room within a room. Brown looks warm and goes well with wooden floors, leather and natural materials. The sofa is suited to large rooms. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
At 4.4 m wide and 2.8 m deep, this Groundpiece is a sofa for large rooms. Allow for walkways all round – as a rule of thumb, 60 to 80 cm in front of the sofa. The top of the back is just 70 cm high, so the sofa does not look bulky despite its size. With a seat height of 40 cm, you sit low and relaxed, and the down cushions at your back give softly and invite you to lean back.
Elements and additions
A Groundpiece this large can be complemented with footstools. Flexform makes them with sides of 97 or 122 cm, also with a cowhide backrest that turns the footstool into a seat. There are also back cushions with or without a support roll and smaller cushions from 40 by 40 cm. According to the manufacturer, new covers for existing Flexform furniture are available through authorised dealers.
Caring for the fabric cover
Down gives way when you sit on it and forms hollows – that is part of the Groundpiece's character. So plump the cushions regularly and air them from time to time. Dab stains with a damp, light-coloured cloth, without rubbing. Because Flexform makes the covers removable, they can be taken off for thorough cleaning; follow the fabric's care label when doing so.
Why buy a pre-owned Flexform Groundpiece?
Flexform began in 1959 as a small workshop in Brianza, founded by the Galimberti brothers, and still has its headquarters and factory in Meda today. The family business has been working with Antonio Citterio since the 1970s. The Groundpiece has been in the range since 2001, and elements and covers are still available. Buying pre-owned, you get the same design with down cushions and removable covers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is it like to sit on the Groundpiece?
Flexform describes the Groundpiece as deep and particularly low. The down cushions give softly, while the core of foam or shape-retaining material provides support. You sit back in a relaxed position and have plenty of room to stretch out.
What are the Groundpiece cushions filled with?
The seat cushions contain sterilised goose down over a core of shape-retaining material, or consist of polyurethane foam and Dacron. The back cushions are filled with goose down, with a foam support roll on request.
Can the covers of the Groundpiece be removed?
Yes. Flexform makes the Groundpiece's covers removable, in both the fabric and the leather version. Fabric covers are best cleaned professionally so that they keep their precise fit.
What armrests are available for the Groundpiece?
There are upholstered armrests with a fabric cover and a metal or solid wood inner structure, and metal armrests covered in cowhide. The latter are shaped like consoles and also serve as a surface for books or a cup, for example.
What is the Premium version of the Groundpiece?
In the Premium version, sterilised goose down lies over an insert of highly elastic, shape-retaining material. Flexform offers it for seat elements and footstools. The standard cushions have a shape-retaining insert or a filling of foam and Dacron.
How do you care for the Groundpiece's down cushions?
Down gives way when you sit on it and forms hollows. Plump the cushions regularly so that the filling is evenly distributed again and the sofa keeps its shape. This is part of the normal care for down upholstery.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Flexform was founded in 1959 as a small workshop in Brianza near Milan and is now run by the third generation of the founding Galimberti family. Design and production take place in Meda, with suppliers within a few kilometres. Since the 1970s Antonio Citterio has designed much of the collection, including the Groundpiece of 2001: deep, notably low and with large down cushions. Pieces are made to order, with a wooden frame, elastic webbing tensioned by hand and foam padding of different densities.
