About the model
Brühl Moule – a transforming sofa with swivel seats
An afternoon with a book, an evening with a film, a night with guests: on the Moule, all you change is the position of the seats. Each seat of the two-seater swivels 90 degrees, turning the armrest into a footrest. You can set the backrests to any angle, right down to horizontal, and adjust the headrests separately. Brühl has been making the Moule since 2003 to a design by Roland Meyer-Brühl. The model now comes in four versions that can be combined.
Moule two-seater in grey fabric
This Moule is a two-seater with a grey fabric cover and a sleep function. When needed, the two seats become a sleeping surface for overnight guests. This makes the sofa a good fit for smaller flats with no room for a separate guest bed. It is also a solution for a study where someone stays the night now and then. Grey can be combined with wood, white or strong cushion colours. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
The Moule's seats rest on sinuous springs, topped with high-density foam and soft wadding. The result is a seat that holds its shape with a soft surface. For the current Moule Medium, specialist retailers state a seat depth of 53 cm; the seat height of 42 cm is a typical figure. The sofa takes up 1.8 m of wall and 90 cm of depth. For sleeping, it needs more space: according to the current dimension sheet, up to 60 cm in width and 44 cm in depth.
Functions and additions
For guests, you turn both swivel seats into the lounge position and lower the backrests to horizontal. The headrests can then be fine-tuned individually. Brühl still offers the Moule and makes matching armchairs, footstools, longchairs and corner sofas. If a fitting weakens over time, the manufacturer says it can be replaced.
Caring for the fabric cover
Above all, a grey fabric cover needs regular vacuuming with the upholstery nozzle. Dab stains with a damp cloth, from the outside towards the centre, without rubbing. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight. For cleaning, remove the cover; whether it is washed or dry-cleaned depends on the fabric quality. According to Brühl, it should never go in the tumble dryer.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Moule?
The Moule has been part of Brühl's range since 2003, and its parts are designed to be swapped out. Covers can be removed and renewed, mechanisms exchanged and padding replaced. Even switching from fabric to leather is possible. Brühl has been designing and manufacturing at its headquarters in Bad Steben since 1948. This keeps a pre-owned Moule usable for a long time. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Moule adjusted by hand or electrically?
By hand. You swivel the seats and set the armrests, backrests and headrests mechanically, with no need for a cable. Brühl developed the fittings specifically for its transforming models and describes the functions as particularly smooth-running.
Does the Moule feel firm or soft to sit on?
That depends on the upholstery layers, which Brühl puts together according to the model, the desired seating comfort and the type of cover. The basis is sinuous springs and high-density foam, with soft wadding on top. This makes the seat hold its shape while feeling soft on the surface.
Can just part of the Moule's cover be replaced?
With covers made of several parts, yes, provided the fabric or leather is still available. According to Brühl, loose seat cushions can also be re-covered separately while the rest of the cover stays in use. Orders are placed through Brühl specialist retailers.
What is a footstool used for with the Moule?
It turns another seat into a lounger. On the Moule three-seater, a footstool in front of the middle seat creates a lounge function, so that, according to Brühl, up to three people can relax. The same works at the middle seat of the corner sofas.
Can you sit on the Moule's lowered armrest?
You should not. According to Brühl, folded-down armrests are intended as a footrest or as an extension of the surface you lie on, not as a seat. Putting your full body weight on them for long periods or repeatedly can impair the mechanism.
What is the bend in the Moule's backrest for?
It is the Moule's signature feature. According to Brühl, the bend gives the seating elements a relaxed, dynamic look and at the same time signals that the backrest can be adjusted flexibly. You adjust the backrests independently of each other.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
