About the model
Brühl Moule Medium – two-seater with two swivel seats
Brühl has been making the Moule since 2003, to a design by Roland Meyer-Brühl. It is intended as a convertible sofa: in a few simple moves, the swivel seats become loungers or a lying surface. Swivel a seat by 90 degrees and the armrest moves to the front, where it lowers to serve as a footrest. You then adjust the backrest and headrest separately. According to Brühl, the distinctive bend in the backrest points to precisely this adjustability. Everything is operated by hand. Medium is the middle size, between Small and Large.
Moule Medium two-seater in brown leather – floor model
This two-seater is a Moule Medium with a leather cover in brown. It was on display and has never been used in a home. It seats two; the medium size fits into a living room just as well as into a study or reading room. Brown leather looks warm and combines well with wood, wool and linen. In rooms with a lot of wood, the sofa forms a calm, warm focal point.
Seating comfort and space
Sinuous springs do their work beneath the seat, topped by polyurethane foam with a soft fleece layer. On the Moule Medium, the seat depth is a good half metre; with a seat height of 42 cm, you sit in a standard, fairly upright position. The two-seater needs 1.8 m along the wall and 1.1 m in depth. According to Brühl, lowered backrests extend up to 44 cm to the rear. A walkway of 60 to 80 cm in front of the sofa is comfortable.
Elements and additions
Brühl complements the Moule with an armchair, footstool and longchair, as well as side table or shelf surfaces with a wooden surface or covered in fabric or leather. On the three-seater, a footstool in front of the middle seat creates a third place to lounge. The base is also available in a choice of metal or wooden runners. Orders are placed through Brühl retail partners, who can also obtain replacement covers.
Caring for the leather cover
Remove dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Dab stains with a slightly damp cloth, without rubbing. Once or twice a year, the leather needs a suitable care product to keep it supple. Do not place the sofa in direct sunlight or next to a radiator. The cover is removable, and Brühl makes replacement covers in leather or fabric to order.
Why a Brühl Moule Medium floor model?
Brühl was founded in Bad Steben in 1948 and still makes all its furniture in Germany today. As a floor model, this Moule Medium has only been on display; its padding and leather cover have never seen everyday use in a home. If the mechanism fittings stop moving smoothly later on, Brühl replaces them, and new covers are also possible. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How do you operate the Moule's swivel seat?
First, swivel the seat by 90 degrees until the armrest is at the front, and lower the armrest to form a footrest. Then, according to specialist retailers, release the backrest using a loop or a button and adjust it to any angle. Finally, adjust the headrest, all by hand.
What does the bend in the Moule's backrest mean?
It is the hallmark of the design. According to Brühl, it gives the seating elements a relaxed, dynamic look and at the same time indicates that the backrest can be adjusted flexibly. You adjust the backrests of the individual seats separately.
What is the difference between the Moule Small, Medium and Large?
Mainly the size: according to Brühl, the lying surface measures 140 x 204 cm on the Medium and 164 x 216 cm on the Large. The Small and the newer Extra Small are the compact versions. All sizes can be combined with each other.
Where can you get a replacement cover for the Moule?
You order replacement covers through a Brühl retail partner. Brühl makes them to order, and you can fit them yourself. With multi-part covers, partial replacement is also possible as long as the fabric or leather is still available.
What is it like to sit on the Moule?
The seat holds its shape and you sit fairly upright: Brühl uses high-density upholstery foams on sinuous springs. According to specialist retailers, the seat depth of the Moule Medium is around 53 cm, a common depth for sofas. If you would rather lie back, swivel the seat into the lounge position.
What can you do if the Moule's mechanism becomes stiff?
Brühl replaces mechanism fittings that no longer move smoothly; according to Brühl, the function is then restored. Spare parts such as castors or glides are available from Brühl specialist retailers or directly from the manufacturer.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
