About the model
Brühl Moule – a sofa bed with swivel seats
A sofa by day, a guest bed by night, all in one piece of furniture: the Moule is intended for this kind of everyday life. Roland Meyer-Brühl designed it so that both seats of a two-seater swivel. A seat is turned 90 degrees, the armrest comes to the front and becomes a footrest; you then recline the backrest to any angle. On the Moule Medium, the two seats become a double bed. Brühl has offered the model since 2003 and today makes it in four versions.
Moule two-seater in grey fabric – floor model
This Moule is a two-seater with a grey fabric cover and a sleep function. It was on display in a showroom and was never used in a home. The two seats swivel and can be converted into a sleeping surface, turning the sofa into a bed for guests. The neutral grey suits almost any interior. The sofa suits living rooms or guest rooms where one piece of furniture has to do both jobs.
Seating comfort and space
How firm a Moule feels depends on the upholstery construction. Brühl combines sinuous springs with layers of high-density foam and adapts them to the model, the desired seating comfort and the type of cover. A soft layer of wadding sits on top. The seat height of 42 cm is typical. The sofa needs 1.8 m of width and 90 cm of depth. In the lying position, a Moule two-seater becomes up to 60 cm wider and 44 cm deeper, according to the current dimension sheet. It is best to measure the space beforehand.
Functions and additions
You operate the sleep function by hand: swing both seats 90 degrees forwards, lower the armrests, and set the backrests to any angle down to horizontal. According to Brühl, the lowered armrests are a footrest, not a seat. The series includes three-seaters, armchairs, footstools and corner configurations. Brühl offers replacement covers and spare parts such as glides through specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
It is best to remove dust and crumbs weekly with the upholstery nozzle. Dab stains straight away with a damp cloth and do not rub. The cover can be removed; it is attached to the frame with hook-and-loop strips. For cleaning, Brühl's guidance is: dry-clean, or, for washable fabrics, wash on a gentle cycle at up to 30 degrees.
Why a Brühl Moule floor model?
The Moule has been in the range since 2003, and Brühl designs its sofas to last for decades. Covers, padding and mechanisms can be renewed, and replacement feet and glides are available from the manufacturer. It is made in Bad Steben, where the family business has been based since 1948. This sofa comes from a showroom, not from a household. It has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the bend in the Moule's backrest for?
It is the Moule's signature feature. According to Brühl, the bend gives the seating elements a relaxed, dynamic look and at the same time signals that the backrest can be adjusted flexibly. You adjust the backrests independently of each other.
Can just part of the Moule's cover be replaced?
With covers made of several parts, yes, provided the fabric or leather is still available. According to Brühl, loose seat cushions can also be re-covered separately while the rest of the cover stays in use. Orders are placed through Brühl specialist retailers.
What can you do if the Moule's mechanism becomes stiff?
If a fitting weakens over time, Brühl says it can always be replaced, which fully restores the function. Brühl states that it has more than 30 years of experience in developing such fittings for swivel seats and rests that can be lowered.
How is the Moule upholstered?
According to Brühl, the seat rests on sinuous springs hooked into the frame. On top are layers of high-density upholstery foam and a soft layer of wadding; for the Moule Medium, specialist retailers state a core of polyurethane foam. Brühl tailors the layers to the model, the seating comfort and the type of cover.
What is a footstool used for with the Moule?
It turns another seat into a lounger. On the Moule three-seater, a footstool in front of the middle seat creates a lounge function, so that, according to Brühl, up to three people can relax. The same works at the middle seat of the corner sofas.
Can the Moule's padding be renewed later on?
Yes. According to Brühl, the padding can be replaced on every one of its seating models while the frame stays in use. Sometimes it is enough just to renew the wadding wrap – the seat then becomes softer or the padding fuller.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
