About the model
Brühl Moule – a two-seater with a sleep function
Sitting upright to read, reclining the backrest for a film, making up a bed for guests: the Moule switches between these roles in a few simple movements. Two swivel seats make this possible. Swivelled 90 degrees, the armrest becomes a footrest, and the backrest can be lowered to any angle, right down to horizontal. The sofa was designed by Roland Meyer-Brühl, and Brühl has been making it since 2003. The Small, Medium, Large and Extra Small versions can be combined.
Moule two-seater in brown fabric
This Moule is a two-seater with a brown fabric cover and a sleep function. Day to day, it seats two people; at night, the sofa becomes a bed for overnight guests. This makes the sofa a good fit for living rooms that turn into guest rooms when visitors come. The brown looks warm and gives light rooms an anchor. Cushions in cream or mustard yellow add cheerful accents. Compared with a separate guest bed, the sofa saves floor space. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
Brühl builds the seat on sinuous springs hooked into the frame, topped with layers of high-density foam and a soft layer of wadding. This way, the seat keeps its shape. The seat height of 42 cm is within the usual range. The sofa is 1.8 m wide and 90 cm deep. Leave around 60 to 80 cm clear in front of the sofa. For the lounge and lying positions, the current dimension sheet adds up to 60 cm of width and 44 cm of depth.
Functions and additions
The two swivel seats are turned into a sleeping surface by hand: turn the seats into the lounge position and lower the backrests to any angle. The headrests can be adjusted separately. If you need more places to lie down, the series has three-seaters with a footstool at the middle seat, as well as corner configurations with a longchair. Brühl also makes replacement covers in leather.
Caring for the fabric cover
Care for the fabric cover by vacuuming it regularly and dabbing stains with a damp cloth straight away. Rubbing roughens the weave. Direct sunlight and being close to a radiator dry out the fibres. The cover can be removed for washing or cleaning; Brühl recommends covering the hook strips with loop tape when doing so.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Moule?
Brühl has been making the Moule since 2003, and its construction is designed for renewal: covers can be removed and replaced, padding and mechanisms swapped out. According to Brühl, a new cover can even switch from fabric to leather. Behind the model is a family business that has been designing and manufacturing in Bad Steben since 1948. We have inspected this piece in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Can you sit on the Moule's lowered armrest?
You should not. According to Brühl, folded-down armrests are intended as a footrest or as an extension of the surface you lie on, not as a seat. Putting your full body weight on them for long periods or repeatedly can impair the mechanism.
Does the Moule need a mains connection?
No. The Moule's swivel seats, armrests, backrests and headrests are adjusted by hand, and there is no motor built in. Brühl describes the transforming functions as particularly smooth-running; changing position takes just a few simple movements.
How is the Moule upholstered?
According to Brühl, the seat rests on sinuous springs hooked into the frame. On top are layers of high-density upholstery foam and a soft layer of wadding; for the Moule Medium, specialist retailers state a core of polyurethane foam. Brühl tailors the layers to the model, the seating comfort and the type of cover.
What can you do if the Moule's mechanism becomes stiff?
If a fitting weakens over time, Brühl says it can always be replaced, which fully restores the function. Brühl states that it has more than 30 years of experience in developing such fittings for swivel seats and rests that can be lowered.
Can the Moule's fabric cover be washed?
If the fabric is washable, yes: Brühl specifies a gentle cycle at up to 30 degrees. Other covers should be dry-cleaned. No cover should go in the tumble dryer; once it is dry, put it back on in reverse order.
What is the bend in the Moule's backrest for?
It is the Moule's signature feature. According to Brühl, the bend gives the seating elements a relaxed, dynamic look and at the same time signals that the backrest can be adjusted flexibly. You adjust the backrests independently of each other.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
