About the model
Brühl Moule – a two-seater with swivel seats
On the Moule, one person can sit upright while the other lies down. Each seat of the two-seater is a swivel seat and can be adjusted on its own. Swivelled 90 degrees, the armrest becomes a footrest, and the backrest can be lowered to any angle, right down to horizontal. The sofa was designed by Roland Meyer-Brühl, and Brühl has offered it since 2003. It now comes in Small, Medium, Large and Extra Small versions, which can be combined with one another.
Moule two-seater in beige fabric
This Moule is a two-seater with a beige fabric cover and a reclining function. For watching TV or reading, you turn one seat into the lounge position and rest your feet on the lowered armrest. This makes the sofa a good fit for reading or TV corners in the living room. The light beige keeps the room feeling open and goes with both wood and grey. The two seats can be used independently of each other. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
The seat rests on sinuous springs, topped by dense upholstery foam and a soft layer of wadding. Brühl states that the aim is a seat that holds its shape and stays consistently comfortable. The seat height of 42 cm is within the usual range. The sofa needs 1.8 m of width and 90 cm of depth, with around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front. With the seats adjusted, a Moule two-seater becomes up to 60 cm wider and 44 cm deeper, according to the current dimension sheet.
Functions and additions
The reclining function is built into the swivel seat. You swing a seat 90 degrees forwards, lower the armrest to form a footrest and then adjust the backrest and headrest. The second seat can stay in the sitting position meanwhile. Everything is operated by hand. Armchairs, footstools or a longchair from the series go well with it; Brühl offers replacement covers through specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
On a light fabric like this beige, stains show up sooner. Vacuum the cover weekly and dab stains straight away with a damp cloth, without rubbing. Direct sunlight can change the shade. For a thorough clean, the cover can be removed; whether it is washed or dry-cleaned depends on the fabric quality.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Moule?
Brühl has been making the Moule since 2003, now in four versions. One argument for a pre-owned piece is that the covers, padding and mechanisms can be replaced. Brühl also offers replacements for feet, castors and glides. The family business has been manufacturing in Bad Steben since 1948 and designs its seating to last for decades. We have inspected this piece in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How is the Moule upholstered?
According to Brühl, the seat rests on sinuous springs hooked into the frame. On top are layers of high-density upholstery foam and a soft layer of wadding; for the Moule Medium, specialist retailers state a core of polyurethane foam. Brühl tailors the layers to the model, the seating comfort and the type of cover.
Can you sit on the Moule's lowered armrest?
You should not. According to Brühl, folded-down armrests are intended as a footrest or as an extension of the surface you lie on, not as a seat. Putting your full body weight on them for long periods or repeatedly can impair the mechanism.
What is a footstool used for with the Moule?
It turns another seat into a lounger. On the Moule three-seater, a footstool in front of the middle seat creates a lounge function, so that, according to Brühl, up to three people can relax. The same works at the middle seat of the corner sofas.
How do you remove the Moule's cover?
The cover is attached to the frame with hook-and-loop strips. Undo the fasteners all the way round the bottom edge and cover the hook strips straight away with loop tape so that they do not damage the fabric. Then pull the cover off upwards, starting from one corner – that is how Brühl describes it.
What is the bend in the Moule's backrest for?
It is the Moule's signature feature. According to Brühl, the bend gives the seating elements a relaxed, dynamic look and at the same time signals that the backrest can be adjusted flexibly. You adjust the backrests independently of each other.
Can the Moule's padding be renewed later on?
Yes. According to Brühl, the padding can be replaced on every one of its seating models while the frame stays in use. Sometimes it is enough just to renew the wadding wrap – the seat then becomes softer or the padding fuller.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
