About the model
Brühl Moule – a transforming sofa for day and night
Putting your feet up in the evening, reading at the weekend, making up a bed when guests visit: the Moule is built for changes like these. Roland Meyer-Brühl designed it as a transforming sofa, and Brühl has offered it since 2003. On the two-seater, each seat is a swivel seat. Turn it 90 degrees and the armrest comes to the front and becomes a footrest. The backrest can then be set to any angle, right down to horizontal. According to Brühl, the bend in the backrest points to exactly this adjustability.
Moule two-seater in beige and grey fabric
This Moule two-seater is upholstered in beige and grey fabric and has a sleep function. During the day it offers two seats; when guests stay, the two swivel seats become a sleeping surface. The combination of beige and grey looks calm and works well with coloured cushions. The sofa suits living rooms, studies or guest rooms with no permanent space for a bed. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
Brühl upholsters the Moule on a base of sinuous springs, topped with layers of high-density foam and a soft layer of wadding. The seat holds its shape and feels soft on the surface. With a seat height of 42 cm, the sofa is at the lower end of the usual range. In seating mode, it needs 1.8 m of width and 90 cm of depth. With the seats swivelled and the rests lowered, a Moule two-seater becomes up to 60 cm wider and 44 cm deeper, according to the current dimension sheet.
Functions and additions
For the night, you turn both swivel seats into the lounge position and lower the backrests to horizontal; this creates the sleeping surface. You adjust the headrests separately, all by hand. The series also includes three-seaters, armchairs, footstools, longchairs and corner configurations. Brühl offers replacement covers and spare parts such as castors or glides through specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
Remove dust with the upholstery nozzle, and dab stains with water and a light-coloured cloth, without rubbing. Test any stain remover first on a hidden area. The Moule's covers are removable and attached to the frame with hook-and-loop strips. Washable Brühl fabrics can go on a gentle cycle at up to 30 degrees; all others should be dry-cleaned.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Moule?
The Moule has been in the range since 2003, and almost everything on it can be renewed. According to Brühl, the mechanisms can be replaced if they no longer move smoothly; the manufacturer also makes replacement covers that switch from fabric to leather. The padding can be replaced on every Brühl seating model. It is made in Bad Steben, where the family business has operated since 1948. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Moule's padding be renewed later on?
Yes. According to Brühl, the padding can be replaced on every one of its seating models while the frame stays in use. Sometimes it is enough just to renew the wadding wrap – the seat then becomes softer or the padding fuller.
Can you sit on the Moule's lowered armrest?
You should not. According to Brühl, folded-down armrests are intended as a footrest or as an extension of the surface you lie on, not as a seat. Putting your full body weight on them for long periods or repeatedly can impair the mechanism.
What can you do if the Moule's mechanism becomes stiff?
If a fitting weakens over time, Brühl says it can always be replaced, which fully restores the function. Brühl states that it has more than 30 years of experience in developing such fittings for swivel seats and rests that can be lowered.
Does the Moule feel firm or soft to sit on?
That depends on the upholstery layers, which Brühl puts together according to the model, the desired seating comfort and the type of cover. The basis is sinuous springs and high-density foam, with soft wadding on top. This makes the seat hold its shape while feeling soft on the surface.
Can just part of the Moule's cover be replaced?
With covers made of several parts, yes, provided the fabric or leather is still available. According to Brühl, loose seat cushions can also be re-covered separately while the rest of the cover stays in use. Orders are placed through Brühl specialist retailers.
What is a footstool used for with the Moule?
It turns another seat into a lounger. On the Moule three-seater, a footstool in front of the middle seat creates a lounge function, so that, according to Brühl, up to three people can relax. The same works at the middle seat of the corner sofas.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
