About the model
Brühl Moule Small – a compact sofa for small rooms
Even with little space, you still want to read, stretch out and put up guests. For rooms like these, Brühl makes the Moule Small, the compact version of Roland Meyer-Brühl's transforming sofa. Swivel seats are typical of Moule sofas. Swivelled 90 degrees, the armrest becomes a footrest, and the backrest can be reclined to any angle. According to Brühl, the Moule Small makes an extra daybed or guest bed unnecessary. The Moule itself has been in the range since 2003.
Moule Small two-seater in beige fabric
This Moule Small is a two-seater with a beige fabric cover. Beige goes well with wood, white and grey, and the colour scheme can be changed with cushions and throws. The compact format suits city flats, studies and guest rooms – anywhere a large sofa would fill the room. It is also more likely than a wide model to fit into an alcove or under a sloping ceiling. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
With a seat height of 42 cm, you sit within the usual range, towards its lower end. For the current Moule Small, Brühl specifies an adjustable seat height of 42 to 44 cm. Sinuous springs work beneath the seat, topped by high-density foam and a soft layer of wadding – this makes for a seat that holds its shape. The two-seater needs 1.64 m of wall and 1.05 m of depth. Leave around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front so that people can get past comfortably.
Elements and additions
Brühl's Moule Small range includes sofas, corner sofas and armchairs, as well as footstools. The Small, Medium, Large and Extra Small versions can be combined, for example with an armchair next to this two-seater. Brühl makes replacement covers for models with removable covers such as the Moule, in leather too if you wish. You can order them from Brühl specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
Light fabrics like this beige show stains sooner. So dab them off straight away with a damp cloth, without rubbing. Remove dust regularly with the upholstery nozzle. The cover is removable; when taking it off, Brühl advises covering the hook strips with loop tape straight away. Whether the fabric can go in the washing machine depends on the fabric quality; it should never go in the tumble dryer.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Moule Small?
Brühl has been making the Moule since 2003 and designs its seating to last for decades. With a pre-owned Moule Small, this shows in the replaceable parts. Covers, padding and mechanisms can be renewed, and switching from fabric to leather is also possible. It is made at the company's headquarters in Bad Steben, where the family business has operated since 1948. We have inspected this piece in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Moule's swivel seat work?
On the Moule two-seater, each seat can be swivelled 90 degrees on its own. As it turns, the armrest moves to the front and is lowered to become a footrest. The backrest follows, infinitely adjustable and, if you wish, right down to horizontal – creating a lounger.
How does the Moule Small differ from the larger versions?
According to Brühl, the Moule Small is designed to offer a high level of comfort in a compact size and fits where space is limited. The Moule Medium ranges from a stand-alone sofa to a corner configuration, while the Moule Large offers particularly generous dimensions. All versions can be combined.
How is the Moule upholstered?
According to Brühl, the seat rests on sinuous springs hooked into the frame. On top are layers of high-density upholstery foam and a soft layer of wadding; for the Moule Medium, specialist retailers state a core of polyurethane foam. Brühl tailors the layers to the model, the seating comfort and the type of cover.
Can just part of the Moule's cover be replaced?
With covers made of several parts, yes, provided the fabric or leather is still available. According to Brühl, loose seat cushions can also be re-covered separately while the rest of the cover stays in use. Orders are placed through Brühl specialist retailers.
Does the Moule need a mains connection?
No. The Moule's swivel seats, armrests, backrests and headrests are adjusted by hand, and there is no motor built in. Brühl describes the transforming functions as particularly smooth-running; changing position takes just a few simple movements.
What is the bend in the Moule's backrest for?
It is the Moule's signature feature. According to Brühl, the bend gives the seating elements a relaxed, dynamic look and at the same time signals that the backrest can be adjusted flexibly. The backrests can be adjusted independently of each other.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
