Brühl Moule – corner sofa with reclining function

Brühl has been making the Moule since 2003, to a design by Roland Meyer-Brühl. It is intended as a convertible sofa: in a few simple moves, the swivel seats become loungers or a lying surface. Swivel a seat by 90 degrees and the armrest moves to the front, where it lowers to serve as a footrest. You then adjust the backrest and headrest separately. According to Brühl, the distinctive bend in the backrest points to precisely this adjustability. Everything is operated by hand. On the corner configurations made up of a longchair and an add-on sofa, the swivel seat is at the outer end of the add-on sofa.

This Moule is a corner sofa in grey fabric with a reclining function. Seen from the front, the corner is on the left, and there are three seats. The reclining function turns one seat into a lounger, while the other places can stay in the sitting position. This way, one person can put their feet up while the others carry on sitting upright. The corner sofa suits living rooms used for reading, watching television and spending time together. It is one of a kind.

Seating comfort and space

You sit on polyurethane foam over sinuous springs; Brühl uses high-density foams for a seat that holds its shape. The seat is a good half metre deep, and the seat height of 42 cm is within the usual range. The corner sofa takes up around 2.7 m along the wall and 1.96 m on the corner side. In the reclining position, up to 30 cm is added at the side of the swivel seat, according to Brühl, and up to 44 cm to the rear with the backrest lowered.

Functions and additions

The reclining function is built into the swivel seat at the outer end of the add-on sofa. Swivel it 90 degrees forwards and the armrest becomes a footrest, while the backrest reclines to any angle. You adjust the headrest separately, all by hand. On the longchair, the side armrest can be pushed forwards and then serves as a second backrest. With a Moule footstool in front of the middle seat, up to three people can relax in the lounge position, according to Brühl.

Caring for the fabric cover

Vacuum the fabric regularly using an upholstery nozzle. Dab stains straight away with a damp, light-coloured cloth, without rubbing. The cover is attached to the frame with hook-and-loop strips and can be removed. Whether it can go in the washing machine or needs to be dry-cleaned depends on the fabric quality. Direct sunlight can fade colours.
