About the model
Brühl Moule – convertible sofa with swivel seats
Brühl has been making the Moule since 2003, to a design by Roland Meyer-Brühl. It is intended as a convertible sofa: in a few simple moves, the swivel seats become loungers or a lying surface. Swivel a seat by 90 degrees and the armrest moves to the front, where it lowers to serve as a footrest. You then adjust the backrest and headrest separately. According to Brühl, the distinctive bend in the backrest points to precisely this adjustability. Everything is operated by hand. For the corner version, Brühl combines a longchair with an add-on sofa, with the longchair on the right or left as preferred.
Moule corner sofa in white leather
This Moule is a corner sofa in white leather. Seen from the front, the corner is on the right, and it offers three seats in total. With the sleep function, it becomes a place to sleep when you have guests: with all the backrests lowered, it forms a flat lying surface, according to Brühl. White leather brightens up the room and goes well with wood, glass and light floors. The sofa suits a living room with a free corner that is used for sitting during the day and occasionally for overnight stays.
Seating comfort and space
You sit on foam padding over hooked-in sinuous springs; Brühl uses high-density foams that keep their shape. With a seat depth of a good half metre and a seat height of 42 cm, you sit in a standard, fairly upright position. Allow around 2.7 m along the wall and 1.96 m on the corner side. With the backrests lowered, the sofa extends up to 44 cm to the rear, according to Brühl, so leave enough space from the wall.
Functions and additions
Here is how to use the functions: swivel the outer seat of the add-on sofa 90 degrees forwards and lower the armrest to form a footrest. Each backrest is adjusted individually, and the longchair's side armrest slides forwards to act as an extra backrest. Lower all the backrests and you get a flat lying surface. Brühl sells footstools, armchairs and other elements of the series through its retail partners.
Caring for the leather cover
Leather is best cared for dry: remove dust with a soft cloth and blot spills immediately with an absorbent cloth. Once or twice a year, treat the leather with a care product suited to the type of leather. Direct sunlight and nearby radiators dry it out. Also protect white leather from clothing whose dye can rub off, such as dark jeans.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Moule?
Brühl has been making upholstered furniture in Bad Steben since 1948, as a family-owned company manufacturing in Germany. According to Brühl, its seating is designed for decades of use. On the Moule, this shows in the removable covers and replaceable mechanism fittings. If you later prefer fabric to leather, you can have Brühl change the cover. We have inspected this piece in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Moule's leather cover be washed?
No, leather should not be washed. However, the Moule's leather cover is removable, and Brühl makes replacement covers in leather or fabric to order. For everyday care, a soft cloth and a suitable care product once or twice a year are all you need.
How does the Moule corner sofa become a lying surface?
According to Brühl, the corner sofa becomes a flat lying surface when you lower all the backrests. You adjust the backrests individually and to any angle, by hand and without a motor. Leave a little space between the sofa and the wall, as the lowered backrests need room behind them.
Can the Moule be added to later?
Yes. Brühl still has the Moule in its range and sells armchairs, footstools and longchairs through its retail partners. According to Brühl, the sizes can be combined, so elements from a different Moule version will also match.
What does the bend in the Moule's backrest mean?
It is the hallmark of the design. According to Brühl, it gives the seating elements a relaxed, dynamic look and at the same time indicates that the backrest can be adjusted flexibly. You adjust the backrests of the individual seats separately.
What can you do if the Moule's mechanism becomes stiff?
Brühl replaces mechanism fittings that no longer move smoothly; according to Brühl, the function is then restored. Spare parts such as castors or glides are available from Brühl specialist retailers or directly from the manufacturer.
How is the Moule's upholstery constructed?
According to specialist retailers, you sit on polyurethane foam over a base of sinuous springs. Brühl tops its upholstery with a soft layer of fleece. The back cushions are quilted into chambers, so they keep their shape.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
