About the model
Brühl Moule – sitting, relaxing and sleeping
Roland Meyer-Brühl designed the Moule as a sofa that transforms in a few simple moves; Brühl has been making it since 2003. At the heart of the design is the swivel seat: turn it by 90 degrees and the armrest comes to the front to become a footrest. You then lower the backrest to any angle, right down to horizontal if you wish, and adjust the headrest separately. Its hallmark is the bend in the backrest, which, according to Brühl, points to this adjustability. For the corner version, Brühl combines a longchair with an add-on sofa, with the longchair on the right or left as preferred.
Moule corner sofa in black thick leather
This Moule corner sofa has a cover of black thick leather. Seen from the front, the corner is on the left, and there is room for three people. The sleep function lets you set the sofa up for overnight guests: with all the backrests lowered, it forms a flat lying surface. The robust leather adds a calm, dark accent to the room. The sofa suits larger living rooms where the corner becomes a shared seating area. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
The seat is made of foam padding on a sinuous spring base, topped with a soft layer of fleece. According to specialist retailers, the back cushions are quilted into chambers, so they keep their shape. With a seat height of 42 cm and a seat depth of a good half metre, you sit upright, while the longchair is there for stretching out. The corner sofa needs around 2.7 m along the wall and 1.96 m on the corner side. To lower the backrests, allow up to 44 cm of space behind them, according to Brühl.
Functions and additions
For sleeping, lower all the backrests until the corner sofa forms a flat lying surface, according to Brühl. For relaxing, the swivel seat at the outer end of the add-on sofa is all you need: swivel the seat 90 degrees, lower the armrest into a footrest and recline the backrest. The longchair's sliding side armrest serves as an extra backrest. A matching Moule armchair with its own swivel seat is sold through Brühl specialist retailers.
Caring for the leather cover
Leather is best cared for dry: remove dust with a soft cloth and blot spills immediately with an absorbent cloth. Once or twice a year, treat the thick leather with a care product suited to the type of leather. Direct sunlight and nearby radiators dry it out. Leather cannot be washed, but Brühl can replace the removable cover later on.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Moule?
Brühl was founded in Bad Steben in 1948 and is still family-owned today; its furniture is made in Germany. The company designs its seating for decades of use. For the Moule, this means that replacement covers and spare parts such as castors or glides are available from specialist retailers, and Brühl can replace the padding and mechanism fittings. This makes a pre-owned Moule a purchase for many years as well. We have inspected this piece in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How do you adjust the Moule's headrest?
First set the backrest to the position you want, then adjust the headrest separately. According to specialist retailers, simply pushing or pulling the headrest is enough. This lets you adapt the support for your head and neck to a sitting or lying position.
How does the Moule corner sofa become a lying surface?
According to Brühl, the corner sofa becomes a flat lying surface when you lower all the backrests. You adjust the backrests individually and to any angle, by hand and without a motor. Leave a little space between the sofa and the wall, as the lowered backrests need room behind them.
Which elements does the Moule series include?
Brühl makes the Moule as a sofa with two or three seats, as an armchair, footstool and longchair, and as a corner configuration. The longchair comes in a width of 98 or 128 cm. There are also side shelves with a wooden surface or covered in fabric or leather.
Where can you get a replacement cover for the Moule?
You order replacement covers through a Brühl retail partner. Brühl makes them to order, and you can fit them yourself. With multi-part covers, partial replacement is also possible as long as the fabric or leather is still available.
Can you sit on the Moule's lowered armrest?
It is best not to. Brühl intends the folded-out armrests to be used as a footrest or an extension of the lying surface, not as a seat. Do not put your full body weight on them, as this can strain the mechanism over time.
How is the Moule's upholstery constructed?
According to specialist retailers, you sit on polyurethane foam over a base of sinuous springs. Brühl tops its upholstery with a soft layer of fleece. The back cushions are quilted into chambers, so they keep their shape.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
