Brühl Moule – convertible sofa with swivel seat

The Moule is a design by Roland Meyer-Brühl, and Brühl presents it in its brochure as “the original since 2003”. The design combines a sofa, a lounger and a bed in one piece of furniture. At the heart of the idea are the swivel seats: they turn by 90 degrees, bringing the armrest to the front, where it becomes a footrest. You then lower the backrest to any angle, right down to horizontal if you wish. Brühl uses specially developed fittings for these movements. A characteristic feature is the bend in the backrest. Brühl puts its corner configurations together from a longchair and an add-on sofa.

This corner sofa from the Moule series is upholstered in black thick leather. Seen from the front, the corner is on the left, and there are three seats in total. Thanks to the sleep function, the sofa turns into a flat lying surface when needed, so overnight guests do not need a bed of their own. Black leather goes with light walls just as well as with dark wooden floors. The corner sofa suits a living room with a free corner where several people often sit together.

Seating comfort and space

Sinuous springs do their work beneath the seat, topped by polyurethane foam padding with a soft fleece layer. According to Brühl, this makes for a seat that holds its shape. The seat is a good half metre deep, and the seat height of 42 cm is within the usual range. In the room, the corner sofa takes up around 2.7 m in width and 1.96 m on the corner side. If you lower the backrests, you need up to 44 cm of space behind them, according to Brühl. A walkway of 60 to 80 cm in front of the sofa is comfortable.

Functions and additions

The Moule is operated by hand. On the add-on sofa, the outer seat turns by 90 degrees, bringing the armrest to the front, where it lowers to serve as a footrest. According to specialist retailers, you release the backrests using a loop or a button and lower them to any angle, down to a flat lying surface if you wish. Brühl sells footstools, armchairs and other elements of the series through its retail partners.

Caring for the leather cover

Even robust thick leather like this needs gentle care: remove dust with a soft, dry cloth, and only dab stains, do not rub them. Once or twice a year, it benefits from a suitable leather care product. Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight, as otherwise the leather will dry out. The cover is removable, and Brühl makes replacement covers in leather or fabric to order.

Behind the Moule is Brühl, a family-owned company from Upper Franconia founded in 1948. Design and production are based at the company's headquarters in Bad Steben. The way it is built makes a good case for buying pre-owned: Brühl crafts its wooden frames from solid beech. The covers can be removed and replaced, and Brühl can swap out the mechanism fittings. If you later prefer fabric to leather, you can have the cover changed. This piece, too, has been inspected in eight stations.
