About the model
Brühl Fourtwo – the corner sofa that becomes a bed
Play area, lounging area, bed and sofa in one: that is how Brühl describes the Fourtwo by Roland Meyer-Brühl. By day, you sit in the compact corner, and in the evening you stretch out on the longchair. If guests stay over, it turns into a double bed in a few easy steps. Under the swivel sofa's lift-up armrest there is a table surface with room for a book, a glass or the remote control. When needed, you can pull the longchair's side arm forward as an extra backrest. The swivel sofa can be placed to the right or left of the longchair.
Fourtwo corner sofa in black fabric with sleep function
This Fourtwo is a corner sofa with a black fabric cover and a sleep function. The longchair forms the corner on the right, seen from the front, and the swivel sofa stands to its left. Black looks calm and graphic and is more forgiving in everyday use than light shades. The corner sofa suits city flats and guest rooms where one piece of furniture needs to be both a sofa and a guest bed. It seats three people.
Seating comfort and space
According to specialist retailers, the seat rests on a sinuous spring base with a polyurethane foam core. In the soft version it feels soft and relaxed, in compact pleasantly firmer. The seat height of 44 cm is within the usual range. As a sofa, the Fourtwo needs around 2.6 m of wall space and 1.85 m of depth. As a bed, the depth increases to up to 210 cm according to the dimension sheet, so plan for some room to move in front of it.
Functions and additions
On the Fourtwo, the sleep function lies in the swivel sofa. Turn it through 90 degrees until it is parallel to the longchair. In a few easy steps, this creates a double bed of 150 × 210 cm, without any motor. Brühl offers headrests and two table modules as options, which are useful when it is used as a bed. Replacement covers are available from Brühl through specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
The Fourtwo's fabric covers are removable and attached to the sofa body with hook-and-loop tape. Once you have undone the hook-and-loop tape, cover the hooks straight away with loop tape so that they do not damage the fabric. Washable covers can go on a gentle cycle at up to 30 °C, and others should be dry-cleaned. The cover should never go in the tumble dryer.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Fourtwo?
Brühl has been making seating in its workshop in Bad Steben since 1948, with much of the work done by hand. The company has more than 30 years of experience with fittings for convertible models such as the Fourtwo. If a fitting wears, it can be replaced, and the covers are removable and replaceable. This keeps a pre-owned Fourtwo usable for a long time. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How do you operate the Fourtwo's swivel sofa?
You turn the swivel sofa through 90 degrees by hand – there is no motor. Depending on its position, it forms a corner with the longchair or stands parallel next to it. Brühl developed the swivel fittings specifically for convertible models.
How is the Fourtwo's seat constructed?
A specialist retailer describes the corner sofa's seat as having a sinuous spring base and a polyurethane foam core, and gives the seat depth as 52 cm. The soft version is softer, while compact is firmer.
What is the difference between Fourtwo soft and Fourtwo compact?
The soft version has soft, relaxed upholstery and looks cosy. The compact version feels pleasantly firmer and, with its smooth surfaces, has a clean-cut look that shows off patterned covers well. Each version has its own matching set of cushions.
What extras are available for the Fourtwo?
Optional extras include headrests and two table modules: one table under the swivel sofa and one under the side arm of the longchair. The dimension sheet also lists a footstool. For the base, you can choose between metal and wood.
What happens if a fitting on the Fourtwo starts to wear?
Brühl has been developing fittings for convertible models for more than three decades. According to Brühl, if a fitting wears over time, it can always be replaced, which restores the function. Your first point of contact is a Brühl specialist retailer.
How long has the Fourtwo been around?
According to Stylepark, the compact version dates from 2009 and was presented at the imm furniture fair. The soft version, with soft, relaxed upholstery, followed in 2021. Both consist of a longchair and a swivel sofa.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
