About the model
Brühl Belami – upholstered chair with a low backrest
Belami is a family of chairs and benches designed by Kati Meyer-Brühl, Creative Director at Brühl since 2008. It comes in two backrest heights: belami low with a low backrest and belami high with a high backrest, which Brühl introduced in 2019. The upholstery of belami low is either smooth or button-tufted, and the base is made of solid wood or metal. The Belami bench won the Focus Open award in silver in 2013 and a Special Mention at the German Design Award in 2014.
Belami upholstered chair in red leather
This Belami has a red leather cover. Judging by its dimensions, it corresponds to the chair in the belami low line, with a compact upholstered body and a low backrest. Brühl envisages these chairs mainly at dining and meeting tables. Together with a bench from the same line, it creates a seating ensemble at the table. On its own, it suits a desk, a hallway or a bedroom. The strong red adds a distinct splash of colour.
Seating comfort and space
On the Belami you sit upright, as on an upholstered dining chair. The seat height of 48 cm is higher than that of a sofa, which makes getting up easier and suits the height of a dining table. The chair needs a floor area of 54 × 54 cm and is 73 cm high. At a dining table, allow around 60 cm of width per place so that there is room for elbows.
Elements and additions
Besides the chair, the belami low line includes benches 115, 150 and 190 cm long. The belami high line has high backrests and comes as a bench in the same lengths or as a single seat. According to Brühl, the two lines can be combined with each other. For smooth covers, Brühl offers replacement covers through specialist retailers.
Caring for the leather cover
Remove dust with a soft, dry cloth. Dab stains with a slightly damp cloth without rubbing. Once or twice a year, treat the leather with a suitable care product. Keep the chair away from direct sunlight and radiators. According to Brühl, smooth belami low covers are removable – you can tell by the hook-and-loop strips along the bottom edge.
Why buy a pre-owned Brühl Belami?
Brühl is a family business and has been making seating in its own workshop in Bad Steben since 1948, with much of the work done by hand. Brühl describes the belami low chairs as being of timeless, lasting value and, thanks to their workmanship, durable. On every Brühl seating model, the upholstery can be replaced while the frame continues to be used. The workshop also re-covers models with fixed upholstery on request. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between belami low and belami high?
The difference lies in the backrest. The low backrest of belami low suits dining and meeting tables, while the high backrests of belami high divide up spaces and create secluded spots. Brühl also recommends combining the two lines in one ensemble.
Which versions of Belami low are available?
The belami low line comprises a chair and benches in three lengths. You can choose smooth upholstery or decorative button tufting, and a frame of solid wood or metal. The covers are leather or fabric.
Is the Belami's cover removable?
On belami low chairs with smooth covers, yes – Brühl describes these covers as removable and replaceable. They are held in place by hook-and-loop strips, whereas a fixed cover is stapled. Brühl does not state this for button-tufted versions.
What did Brühl design the Belami for?
The belami low chairs are intended for dining tables and meeting rooms, and Brühl also mentions galleries, museums and hotels. Each seating element works as a standalone piece or as part of an ensemble, including together with belami high.
What extras are available for Belami high?
The belami high benches are available with one or two armrests, long or short. Brühl also offers extra cushions and head cushions. Besides benches closed at both ends, there are also elements that are open on one side.
Can a Belami be re-covered later on?
In most cases, yes. For models with removable covers, Brühl offers replacement covers, and switching from leather to fabric is possible. The workshop in Bad Steben also accepts pieces with fixed upholstery for re-covering.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
The family firm Brühl has made upholstered furniture in Bad Steben, Upper Franconia, since 1948. Many of its sofas adjust or transform, and numerous designs are by Roland Meyer-Brühl: on the Roro (since 1998) the arms and back adjust continuously, while on the Moule (since 2003) two swivel seats convert into loungers or a sleeping surface in a few movements. Frames are made from solid beech, and each complete cover is sewn by one person. Kati Meyer-Brühl has been creative director since 2008.
