About the model
Minotti Hamilton – sofa on a low metal frame
Rodolfo Dordoni designed the Hamilton for Minotti in 2004. It is a seating system with a straight line and compact volumes. Its distinguishing feature is a metal frame that runs around the elements just above the floor. This detail became a Minotti trademark and, according to the manufacturer, set a trend in the industry. The structure is made of solid wood, padded with polyurethane foam of varying densities. The seat and back cushions are filled with chambered goose down over a core of high-resilience polyurethane.
Hamilton three-seater in grey fabric – floor model
This Hamilton is a three-seater with a grey fabric cover. It was on display in a showroom and was never used in a home. The sofa consists of two elements that together form a straight seat. The calm grey emphasises the low line. With three seats, the sofa is suitable as the main sofa in a living room. An armchair or the Hamilton bench completes it to form a seating group.
Seating comfort and space
The Hamilton gives you a soft seat. The down gives way as you sit down, while the foam core and the elastic straps underneath provide support. At 40 cm, the seat height is slightly below the usual 42 to 45 cm, so you sit in a rather laid-back way. The depth of 1.04 m invites you to lean back. The sofa needs around 2.8 m along the wall. Leave around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of the sofa.
Elements and additions
According to Minotti, the 280 cm wide Hamilton sofa consists of two end elements of 140 cm each. In 2019, Minotti put the family at 53 elements. It includes centre elements, chaise longues, corners and a bench. Accessories include down-filled scatter cushions and a headrest. The Hamilton is still in the range; elements and cushions can be added through Minotti retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
You can remove the fabric cover completely; to do so, the surrounding base is taken off. It is cleaned according to the care instructions for the fabric in question. For everyday care, vacuum the cover regularly with the upholstery nozzle. Dab stains straight away with a slightly damp cloth, without rubbing. Direct sunlight can fade grey fabrics over time.
Why a Minotti Hamilton floor model?
Minotti was founded in Meda in 1948 by Alberto Minotti and is now run by the third generation. The Hamilton has been in the range since 2004 and, according to Minotti, is a worldwide success. This sofa was only on display in a showroom and was never used in a home. The solid wood structure and the removable fabric cover point to a long service life. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is it like to sit on the Minotti Hamilton?
Fairly soft. The seat and back cushions are filled with chambered goose down, which gives way as you sit down. A core of high-resilience polyurethane gives the cushions their shape, and elastic straps with a high rubber content give the seat its spring.
How do you remove the Hamilton’s fabric cover?
According to Minotti, the fabric cover is fully removable once the surrounding base has been taken off. You can then clean it according to the care instructions for the fabric in question, or have it cleaned. Leather covers on the Hamilton, by contrast, are fixed.
How do the Hamilton, Hamilton Sofà and Hamilton Modulo differ?
Mainly in the armrests and backrests. On the Hamilton, the armrest is vertical and the back is inclined. On the Hamilton Sofà, both are vertical, which looks more formal. On the Hamilton Modulo, both are inclined; according to Minotti, this creates a soft, tub-like shape.
What accessories are available for the Hamilton?
Minotti offers scatter cushions in three versions: Hamilton and Cross in 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 cm, and Milano in 46 × 46 cm. All are filled entirely with chambered goose down and have removable covers. There is also a headrest measuring 60 × 79 cm.
Is the Hamilton also available without the metal frame?
Yes. Instead of the surrounding frame, there is a version with feet in open-pore ash, stained mocha. Minotti describes it as a more discreet, simpler solution that keeps the seating comfort of the Hamilton.
How do you care for the Hamilton’s down cushions?
Down gives way when you sit and shifts within its chambers over time. That is why you should shake and plump up the seat and back cushions regularly. The filling then spreads out evenly again, and the cushions keep their shape.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Minotti was founded in 1948 by Alberto Minotti in Meda, in the Brianza area, initially as a small workshop; from the 1960s the business grew larger and more industrial. In 1991 his sons Renato and Roberto Minotti took over the family company. From 1998 until his death in 2023, the Milan architect Rodolfo Dordoni was art director and shaped the collections, for example with the Hamilton seating system of 2004 and its low base. The furniture is made with modern technology and finished by hand.
