About the model
Minotti Hamilton – modular sofa on a base close to the floor
With the Hamilton, Minotti set a trend in 2004, by its own account: modular sofas on a base close to the floor. It was designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, the company’s art director at the time. A metal frame with an oval profile encloses the elements, so the sofa seems to rest just above the floor. The structure is made of solid wood, and elastic straps with a high rubber content give the seat its spring. A first layer of heat-bonded fibre on white cotton cloth wraps the padding.
Hamilton two-seater in grey fabric
This Hamilton is a two-seater with a grey fabric cover. The sofa is built in one piece and fits well into smaller living rooms or a study. Placed opposite a larger sofa, it forms a seating group. The grey looks understated and can be combined with wood, leather and strong colours. Two people sit comfortably side by side here.
Seating comfort and space
The Hamilton is softly upholstered: the goose down gives way, while the polyurethane core and the straps provide support. The seat height of 40 cm is slightly below the usual 42 to 45 cm, which gives a laid-back feel. The sofa is 1.04 m deep and offers plenty of room to lean back. It needs around 2.08 m of wall space. Allow around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.
Elements and additions
Minotti offers the 208 cm wide two-seater as a ready-made sofa in the Hamilton line; there are also lengths from 180 to 314 cm. For larger combinations, end elements, centre elements, corners and chaise longues are available. Minotti also offers down cushions in three versions and a headrest. The Hamilton can still be added to through Minotti retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
The Hamilton’s fabric cover is fully removable once the surrounding base has been taken off. This means you can have it cleaned according to the fabric’s instructions. In between, regular vacuuming with the upholstery nozzle is enough. Soak up fresh stains with an absorbent cloth and dab rather than rub. Do not place the sofa in full sun for long periods.
Why buy a pre-owned Minotti Hamilton?
Minotti is a family business from Meda in the Brianza region, founded in 1948. Since 2022, it has been registered in Italy as a historic brand of national interest. The Hamilton has been part of the range for over twenty years, so a pre-owned piece is not a discontinued model. The solid wood structure, down cushions and removable fabric cover point to a long service life. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How can you recognise a Minotti Hamilton?
By its base: a metal frame with an oval 40 × 20 mm profile runs around the elements. This makes the sofa seem to rest just above the floor. The frame is black nickel-plated or lacquered in bronze. This detail became a Minotti trademark.
What can be added to the Hamilton two-seater?
Minotti still offers the Hamilton. Suitable additions to the two-seater include the Hamilton bench, scatter cushions or the headrest, and a second sofa from the series if needed. With fabric, bear in mind that a new cover may differ in shade from the existing one.
What is it like to sit on the Minotti Hamilton?
Fairly soft. The seat and back cushions are filled with chambered goose down, which gives way as you sit down. A core of high-resilience polyurethane gives the cushions their shape, and elastic straps with a high rubber content give the seat its spring.
How do you remove the Hamilton’s fabric cover?
According to Minotti, the fabric cover is fully removable once the surrounding base has been taken off. You can then clean it according to the care instructions for the fabric in question, or have it cleaned. Leather covers on the Hamilton, by contrast, are fixed.
What is the bench in the Hamilton range for?
The Hamilton bench measures 104 × 104 cm and is 40 cm high, the same height as the seat. In front of the sofa, it serves as a footrest or an extra seat. With a tray on top, it becomes a place for books and drinks.
How long has the Hamilton been around?
Rodolfo Dordoni designed the Hamilton in 2004. Minotti calls it a worldwide success and has extended the family again and again since then. According to Minotti, in 2019 the family comprised 53 elements across the three lines Hamilton, Hamilton Sofà and Hamilton Modulo.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Minotti was founded in 1948 by Alberto Minotti in Meda, in the Brianza area, initially as a small workshop; from the 1960s the business grew larger and more industrial. In 1991 his sons Renato and Roberto Minotti took over the family company. From 1998 until his death in 2023, the Milan architect Rodolfo Dordoni was art director and shaped the collections, for example with the Hamilton seating system of 2004 and its low base. The furniture is made with modern technology and finished by hand.
