About the model
HAY Mags Soft – deep seats, rounded edges
The Mags Soft comes from HAY’s design studio and builds on the Mags system, whose guiding principle is maximum comfort with few details. Rounded edges and soft cushions take the severity out of the clean basic shape. Inside, a plywood frame with Nosag zigzag springs works together with several layers of foam padding. On top lies a layer of duck and goose feathers and foam sticks. HAY designed the sofa for both home and office, and the seams are deliberately left visible.

A Mags Soft as a compact corner sofa: the cover is grey fabric, and the corner is on the right, seen from the front. Two people sit deep here, and the corner invites you to put your feet up. The sofa suits a flat with limited floor space, a guest room or a work area. HAY designed the series with these uses in mind as well.
Seating comfort and space
Because the frame is low and the seat deep, you tend to lean back rather than sit upright. The seat height is 40 cm, slightly below the usual 42 to 45 cm. The feather topper makes the surface soft, while the foam underneath holds the shape. The sofa takes up around 1.9 m along the wall and 1.4 m at its deepest point. Plan for 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.
Elements and additions
HAY builds the Mags Soft from up to 18 modules, including seats in various widths, corner elements, chaise longues and footstools. The parts are connected by fittings and can be separated again. This means the corner sofa can later grow into a larger seating landscape. A footstool from the series serves as a footrest, an extra seat or, with a tray, a table.
Caring for the fabric cover
On the standard Mags Soft, the cover is fixed; only the Mags Soft Low has also been available with a removable hook-and-loop cover since 2026. So care for the fabric on the sofa: vacuum it regularly with the upholstery nozzle and dab stains promptly with lukewarm water and a clean cloth. Harsh cleaners, bleach and ammonia are off limits. Leave larger stains to a professional upholstery cleaner.
Why buy a pre-owned HAY Mags Soft?
HAY, founded by Mette and Rolf Hay in 2002 and now part of MillerKnoll, developed the Mags Soft for home and office alike. Bought pre-owned, the sofa keeps what makes it special: the deep lounge posture and the soft topper over a firm foam core. Modules can still be added or rearranged. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Which modules are available for the Mags Soft?
HAY offers seat modules in various widths, corner modules, chaise longues and footstools, up to 18 different elements in total. From these you can build two-seaters, corner sofas or large seating landscapes that can be rearranged or extended later.
How is the Mags Soft constructed?
The frame is made of plywood with Nosag zigzag springs. The seat has 11 cm thick foam, while the back and armrests have foam with an additional comfort layer. Each module is topped with a layer about 6 cm thick of duck and goose feathers and foam sticks. The feet are made of black-stained beech.
How does the topper of the Mags Soft keep its shape?
Gently plump up the seat and cushions from time to time. This airs the feathers and moves them back into place, as HAY recommends. Do not sit on the back or armrests, so that the upholstery keeps its shape.
What is a footstool used for with the Mags Soft?
Push the footstool up to the sofa when you need more room to sit or lie down. Placed on its own, it is an extra seat for guests. With a tray on top, you can use it as a low coffee table.
Why does the Mags Soft have visible seams?
On the Mags Soft, the visible seams are part of the design and trace its rounded shapes. HAY offers the thread in several colours, such as black, white, light and dark grey or beige. This allows it to stand out against the fabric or blend in with it.
What is the Mags Soft Low?
A version of the Mags Soft with armrests that are lower than the back. This makes the sofa look more open. Since 2026, HAY has also offered the Mags Soft Low with a removable cover attached with hook-and-loop fastening.

Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

The modular Mags sofa was designed in-house and can be extended with corner elements, a chaise longue or additional seats. The Mags Soft version from 2013 adds an extra layer of feathers and foam pieces to each module, above high-density foam and a plywood frame with sinuous springs.
