About the model
Ligne Roset Ploum – low sofa like a ripe fruit
A ripe, luscious fruit – that is how Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec imagined the Ploum when they designed it for Ligne Roset. The sofa was presented in 2011, and Ligne Roset still makes it today with a high and a low backrest. The brothers see the stretchy fabric as a symbol of today’s lifestyle. It is double-layer quilted over Bultex foam in several densities with a super-soft top layer. Everything is supported by a frame of tubular steel and steel mesh.
Ploum Medium two-seater in red fabric
This Ploum Medium is a two-seater with a low backrest, upholstered in red fabric. At Ligne Roset, ‘Medium’ stands for the 203 cm wide version; in Germany, this model is called the ‘large 2-seater low-back’. The low backrest keeps the sofa low and open, so it does not block any views and even fits in front of a window. The strong red sets a clear accent of colour in a living room or reading room.
Seating comfort and space
The low-back version is just as soft to sit on as the high-back Ploum: a firm Bultex foam seat core, a super-soft top layer and a stretchy cover. The low backrest mainly supports your back; you do not rest your head against it. With a seat height of 39 cm, you sit lower than on most sofas, which measure 42 to 45 cm. The sofa needs a good two metres along the wall and 0.94 m of depth; at 0.66 m high, it keeps the room open.
Elements and additions
The Ploum has no functions; its versatility lies in its sizes. Ligne Roset makes it with a low backrest in widths of 166 and 203 cm, and with a high backrest in 170, 203 and 250 cm. A pouffe made in the same way complements each sofa, as a footrest or an extra seat. The series is still in the collection, and the pouffe can be added through specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
Ligne Roset describes the cover as removable by a professional; you should not take it off yourself. Remove dust with a soft upholstery nozzle, including from the quilting. Blot fresh stains with a damp, light-coloured cloth rather than rubbing them. According to Ligne Roset, larger stains and a deep clean belong in the hands of a professional upholstery cleaner.
Why buy a pre-owned Ligne Roset Ploum?
Ligne Roset has been making furniture since 1860 and today produces in Briord on the Rhône, with most of the work done by hand. The manufacturer has had the Ploum in its collection since 2011. The construction is robust: a steel frame, Bultex foam in several densities and a cover that an upholsterer can remove. A matching pouffe is available through specialist retailers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What does Medium mean for the Ploum?
This is what Ligne Roset calls the 203 cm wide version in France and the UK, available with a high or a low backrest. In Germany, it is called the ‘large 2-seater’. The 170 and 166 cm versions are narrower; only the 250 cm high-back version is wider.
How do the high-back and low-back Ploum differ?
On the high-back version, the backrest reaches up to your head, and your back and head find soft contact everywhere. The low-back version is lower and less deep; it looks more open and leaves the space behind the sofa free. For a nap with your head resting, the high-back version is the better choice.
What is special about the cover of the Ploum?
It is made of a stretchy knitted fabric that is double-layer quilted and held in place by quilting points. According to Ligne Roset, it gives the upholstery room to adapt to the body and then quickly return to its shape. The quilting is reminiscent of button tufting.
What is it like to sit in the Ploum?
Soft and enveloping. According to Ligne Roset, the whole body rests on a soft, inviting surface, and every position is possible, from sitting upright to lying down. The seat core is firmer than the back and the top layer, so the seat still gives support.
Which sizes does the Ploum come in?
Ligne Roset makes the Ploum with a high backrest in three widths from 170 to 250 cm. With a low backrest, it comes in two widths, 166 and 203 cm. There is also a pouffe that complements each of the sofas.
How do you care for the fabric cover of the Ploum?
Vacuum the cover regularly with a soft upholstery nozzle so that no dust collects in the quilting. Dab fresh stains with a damp cloth rather than rubbing them. Test stain removers on a hidden spot first.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Ligne Roset is a French family company, founded by Antoine Roset in the Ain department in 1860; it has made upholstered furniture since 1936. The brand name dates from 1973, the year of Michel Ducaroy's Togo. On the Ploum by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (2011), a stretch cover wraps seat, back and armrests in one piece. Pierre Paulin's Pumpkin was designed in 1971 for the Pompidous' private apartment in the Élysée Palace. Its seating is still made in its own workshops in south-eastern France.
