About the model
Rolf Benz Grata – classic upholstery with a spring core
The Grata, formerly listed by Rolf Benz as model 330, is a sofa range with classic upholstery construction. An inner wooden frame supports the spring core suspension. The seat and back are made of polyurethane foam beneath a down-like topper. The range comprised a standalone sofa, an add-on sofa, a corner add-on sofa, an extra-large add-on sofa, an add-on bench and an upholstered end bench. There was a choice of 40 or 43 cm for the seat height, and of gloss chrome or traffic black for the feet. One variant had back cushions with pintucks, that is, with narrow, stitched edges.
Grata corner sofa in brown fabric
This Grata is a corner sofa with a brown fabric cover and room for four people. Seen from the front, the corner is on the right. The brown looks warm and goes well with oak, walnut, linen and cream tones. As a corner solution, the sofa turns a corner of the room into a shared seating area. It suits families and living rooms where several people sit together in the evening. With a coffee table in the middle, it creates an enclosed seating area.
Seating comfort and space
The Grata feels soft: beneath the cover there is a down-like topper, with foam and a spring core underneath. The seat height of 40 cm is slightly below the usual 42 to 45 cm. The corner sofa takes up 3.1 m along its long side, and the right-hand section extends 1.6 m into the room. Allow 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of both sides.
Elements and additions
The Grata was conceived as a range: standalone sofas in three widths, add-on and corner elements, an upholstered bench, plus scatter cushions and back cushion pads. The Grata is no longer listed in Rolf Benz’s current range. However, the manufacturer offers a reupholstery service: the factory reupholsters the sofa itself and also replaces the foam if necessary. This is arranged through a Rolf Benz dealer.
Caring for the fabric cover
Vacuum the fabric regularly with the upholstery nozzle and brush it with a soft brush. In between, a clean, damp chamois leather freshens up the fibres. Blot stains immediately with an absorbent, light-coloured cloth, always working from the edge towards the centre. Steam cleaners and cleaners containing solvents damage the cover.
Why buy a pre-owned Rolf Benz Grata?
Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture since 1964, and since 2020 it has carried the ‘Furniture Made in Germany’ label. A pre-owned Grata is a worthwhile choice because it relies on classic upholstery construction: a spring core in the seat, an inner wooden frame and cushions with a soft topper. On top of that, it has a calm shape that adapts to changing interiors. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Which elements make up a Grata corner sofa?
On the Grata, the corner is formed by the corner add-on sofa, combined with an add-on sofa, add-on bench or upholstered end bench. The other elements were used to create straight sofas. This made it possible to adapt the corner sofa to the room.
Why should you plump up the Grata’s cushions?
The down-like topper is filled in chambers, and the filling can shift when you sit on it. Regularly plumping up the cushions and smoothing them from the inside outwards distributes it evenly again. Rolf Benz expressly recommends this.
How do you protect the Grata’s fabric cover from fading?
Keep the sofa out of direct sunlight and away from constant strong halogen light. According to Rolf Benz, dark colours change faster than light ones when exposed to this. This cannot be prevented entirely, as every fabric reacts to light over time.
Can jeans transfer dye to the Grata?
Yes, many dark denim fabrics are not colourfast and can permanently stain upholstery covers. Such discolouration cannot be removed from most covers. A throw on your favourite spot helps to prevent this.
How do you remove stains from the Grata’s fabric cover?
Soak up liquid immediately with an absorbent white cloth and work over a large area from seam to seam. For stains of unknown origin, try lukewarm water with a little mild shampoo first. Do not use the sofa again until everything is dry.
Can Rolf Benz reupholster the Grata?
In most cases, yes. Rolf Benz assesses the piece on the basis of the documents submitted and calculates the cost of each reupholstery job individually. The factory handles the cutting, sewing and upholstering itself, and the process is arranged through a dealer.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
