About the model
Bolia Sepia – deep lounge sofa on an oak plinth
Glismand & Rüdiger designed the Sepia for Bolia as a lounge sofa with a soft, inviting profile. Its signature feature is the oak plinth, along with handcrafted details. Bolia describes its look as rich and robust. The plinth lifts the upholstery just a few centimetres off the floor. The seat cushions are reversible and rest on a slightly sloping surface so that they do not slide forward. The upholstery combines a feather filling with cold foam, supported by sinuous springs.
Sepia three-seater in blue fabric
This Sepia is a three-seater with a blue fabric cover. The reversible seat cushions rest on the slightly sloping base, and the oak plinth carries the sofa. It offers three people deep, soft seating with plenty of room to lean back. The sofa suits living rooms where people spend long hours reading, talking or watching TV.
Seating comfort and space
The Sepia is a true lounge sofa. Bolia states a seat depth of 75 cm, and the seat height is 40 cm. So you sit deep and fairly laid-back, and getting up takes a little more effort. The feather filling gives softly, while the cold foam underneath provides support. The sofa needs around 2.4 m of wall space and extends 108 cm into the room. Allow around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.
Elements and additions
Bolia makes the Sepia from two-and-a-half-seater to five-seater, with a chaise longue on the left or right, with an open end and as a corner sofa up to a seven-seater. There are also poufs in several sizes, some with storage space.
Caring for the fabric cover
The feather filling settles as you sit. Shake and plump up the cushions regularly so that the filling is evenly distributed. Bolia points out that down-filled sofas take on a more relaxed shape over time. Vacuum the fabric on a low setting with the upholstery nozzle. The cover is fixed in place; dab stains with a damp cloth without rubbing.
Why buy a pre-owned Bolia Sepia?
Bolia was founded in Aarhus in 2000 and makes its furniture to order in Europe. One detail makes the Sepia a good choice as a pre-owned piece: the seat cushions are reversible, so wear is spread evenly. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How is the Sepia upholstered?
The seat and back cushions have a cold foam core topped with a filling of duck feathers and polyester fibres. The seat rests on steel sinuous springs, and the load-bearing parts of the frame are made of birch.
Why are the Sepia's seat cushions slightly tilted?
The seat cushions rest on a slightly sloping base. This keeps them in place and stops them sliding forward when you sit. As a result, you need to straighten the cushions less often, even after a long evening.
Is the Sepia's cover removable?
Yes, the fabric cover is fully removable and replaceable. This makes cleaning easier and allows for a different fabric later on. Bolia does not offer replacement covers for leather versions.
Why do the Sepia's cushions change over time?
The feather filling shifts as you sit. Bolia recommends plumping up the cushions regularly. They never fully return to their original shape, and Bolia calls the relaxed, lived-in look a natural characteristic of this filling.
How do you clean the Sepia's removable cover?
Bolia attaches its replacement covers with hook-and-loop fastening, so you can take the cover off without tools. According to Bolia, you can wash many fabrics yourself, while others are cleaned professionally – the label is what counts. Then treat the fabric with a protective spray once or twice a year.
What does a pouf add to the Sepia?
A pouf extends the deep sofa so that you can stretch out your legs, or serves as an extra seat. Bolia offers Sepia poufs measuring 70 and 90 cm, plus a larger one with storage space. Replacement covers are available for the poufs as well.

Bolia was founded in 2000 in Aarhus, Denmark, where its headquarters remain today. The company works with more than 50 designers from 19 countries. The Scandinavia and the Cosy are by the Danish duo Glismand & Rüdiger, while the modular Noora, with modules in two depths, comes from the in-house design team. The sofas are built by hand in Europe, most of them made to order with a choice of cover, colour and size.
