About the model

Roche Bobois Mah Jong – seating landscape made of three basic elements

Hans Hopfer, a painter, sculptor and designer, created the Mah Jong for Roche Bobois in 1971. His idea was a sofa with no frame and no legs, made of nothing but cushions. Three basic elements – seat cushion, straight back element and corner element – are stacked, lined up or grouped. This creates a straight sofa, a corner sofa, a lounge armchair or a daybed. Roche Bobois makes the cushions in its own workshop in Italy. There, each piece is sewn individually by hand and made in the manner of a mattress.

Mah Jong three-seater in multicoloured fabric

This Mah Jong is a three-seater with a multicoloured fabric cover. With no frame and no legs, it stays flexible: each element is a cushion in its own right and can be moved individually. This makes the set a good choice for rooms that change often. It also works as a second seating option alongside a classic sofa. The bold colours bring life to a calm room.

Seating comfort and space

Anyone who takes a seat on the Mah Jong sits low: the seat height is 32 cm instead of the usual 42 to 45 cm. This invites you to lean back and stretch out, and a little momentum helps when getting up. The seat cushions each measure 95 × 95 cm and are only 19 cm high. Arranged as a row, the set needs a long stretch of free wall, with around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front.

Elements and additions

Today, the Mah Jong range also includes accessories: a small cushion and a lumbar cushion, filled with feathers and fibres. The straight back element is available with a headrest that you fold up by hand. For elements on platforms, Roche Bobois offers an anti-slip mat so that nothing slides out of place. The Mah Jong is also available as an outdoor version with fabrics for outside use, and as a bed.

Caring for the fabric cover

Swap the elements around from time to time so that all the seats are used evenly. Remove dust dry with a very soft brush, as hard brushes can damage the fibres. Direct sunlight and sources of heat make fabric colours fade over time. Always dab stains, never rub them, and test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first.

Why buy a pre-owned Roche Bobois Mah Jong?

For over fifty years, Roche Bobois has made the Mah Jong according to the same principle, with the cushions handmade in Italy. The Parisian company has reissued the sofa in new fabrics time and again, while the basic elements have stayed the same. A pre-owned Mah Jong is therefore not a discontinued model. You can rearrange it at any time or add more elements. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

Which layouts are possible with the Mah Jong?

According to Roche Bobois, the options range from a lounge armchair through a straight sofa and a corner sofa to a daybed. Because no element is fixed to another, you can change the layout as often as you like.

Where does the Mah Jong get its name?

Hans Hopfer named his seating system after the Chinese tile game mahjong. Just as the tiles in the game are laid out again and again, the upholstered elements can be put together into ever new shapes.

What is it like to sit on the Mah Jong?

Low and relaxed, because the cushions lie directly on the floor without a frame. The seat cushions are constructed like a mattress. The wooden platforms from Roche Bobois add height and, according to the manufacturer, make sitting even more comfortable.

How is a Mah Jong cushion constructed?

According to the current Roche Bobois data sheet, the seat cushions are made of high-resilience polyurethane foam with a density of 37 kg/m³ and a layer of wadding on top. The back elements have a wooden structure. All pieces are upholstered, quilted and sewn by hand.

Can a Mah Jong be extended?

Yes, the system is open: you simply add more cushions. Roche Bobois still has the Mah Jong in its collection. Because the fabric collections change, it is worth checking the colour and pattern when adding elements.

How do you clean the Mah Jong’s fabric covers?

Lift the elements one at a time and vacuum them with a soft brush nozzle on the lowest setting. Treat stains immediately, ideally by dabbing with an absorbent cloth. Test any cleaning product on a hidden area first.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

Roche Bobois was created in 1960, when the Roche and Chouchan families, who both sold furniture in Paris, produced their first joint catalogue. The Mah Jong by Hans Hopfer, from 1971, consists of three basic elements that can be placed side by side or stacked; its cover fabrics include designs by Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni. The Bubble by Sacha Lakic is made entirely by hand and covered in specially developed stretch fabrics. The furniture is made to order in small European workshops.
