About the model
Roche Bobois Mah Jong – sofa made entirely of loose cushions
Hans Hopfer, a painter, sculptor and designer, created the Mah Jong for Roche Bobois in 1971. His idea was a sofa with no frame and no legs, made of nothing but cushions. Three basic elements – seat cushion, straight back element and corner element – are stacked, lined up or grouped. This creates a straight sofa, a corner sofa, a lounge armchair or a daybed. Roche Bobois makes the cushions in its own workshop in Italy. There, each piece is sewn individually by hand and made in the manner of a mattress.
Mah Jong three-seater in multicoloured fabric
This Mah Jong is put together as a three-seater and upholstered in multicoloured fabric. The cushions lie directly on the floor, so you sit low and relaxed. It suits anyone who likes to read, listen to music or stretch out close to the floor. As a straight row, the set stands against a wall; as an island, it stands freely in the room. Rearranging it requires neither tools nor assembly.
Seating comfort and space
On the Mah Jong, you sit close to the floor: the seat height is 32 cm, well below the usual 42 to 45 cm. The seat has a lounge-like feel, and getting up takes a little momentum. A seat cushion measures 95 × 95 cm and is 19 cm high. How much floor space the set takes up depends on how you arrange it. Leave around 60 to 80 cm of walking space clear in front of a row of seats.
Elements and additions
Roche Bobois still offers the Mah Jong in its range. The current catalogue lists the elements individually: seat cushions, double seat cushions, back and corner elements, a panoramic corner element and a lounge element. This means a set can be extended. There are also wooden platforms in several widths that raise the seat, as well as matching coffee tables. The fabric collections change, so an exact match for the cover cannot be assured.
Caring for the fabric cover
Roche Bobois recommends dusting fabric covers weekly with a very soft brush. Hard brushes roughen the fibres and encourage pilling. Blot stains immediately with an absorbent cloth, dabbing rather than rubbing. Test cleaning products on a hidden area first. Do not place the cushions in strong sunlight or right next to a radiator.
Why buy a pre-owned Roche Bobois Mah Jong?
Roche Bobois was founded in Paris in 1960 by the Roche and Chouchan families. The company has offered the Mah Jong since 1971, and the basic elements are still the same today. A pre-owned set therefore belongs to a current series and can still be combined with other elements. With no frame or legs, the sofa essentially consists of nothing but cushions and covers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Which covers are available for the Mah Jong?
According to the data sheet, the Mah Jong can be upholstered in almost all Roche Bobois fabrics and leathers. The exceptions are leathers thicker than 1.8 mm, the Jersey and Chroma fabrics, and quilted fabrics.
How is a Mah Jong cushion constructed?
According to the current Roche Bobois data sheet, the seat cushions are made of high-resilience polyurethane foam with a density of 37 kg/m³ and a layer of wadding on top. The back elements have a wooden structure. All pieces are upholstered, quilted and sewn by hand.
Where does the Mah Jong get its name?
Hans Hopfer named his seating system after the Chinese tile game mahjong. Just as the tiles in the game are laid out again and again, the upholstered elements can be put together into ever new shapes.
Is there an adjustable headrest for the Mah Jong?
Yes, as an option: for the straight back element, Roche Bobois offers a fold-up headrest with a manual mechanism. Whether an element has one depends on the version.
Are there platforms for the Mah Jong?
Yes. Roche Bobois offers wooden platforms from single-seat to two-seater size, plus corner and panoramic platforms. They are stained or lacquered and raise the seat. An anti-slip mat keeps the cushions in place on top.
How do you clean the Mah Jong’s fabric covers?
Lift the elements one at a time and vacuum them with a soft brush nozzle on the lowest setting. Treat stains immediately, ideally by dabbing with an absorbent cloth. Test any cleaning product on a hidden area first.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Roche Bobois was created in 1960, when the Roche and Chouchan families, who both sold furniture in Paris, produced their first joint catalogue. The Mah Jong by Hans Hopfer, from 1971, consists of three basic elements that can be placed side by side or stacked; its cover fabrics include designs by Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni. The Bubble by Sacha Lakic is made entirely by hand and covered in specially developed stretch fabrics. The furniture is made to order in small European workshops.
