Roche Bobois Bubble – rounded sofa by Sacha Lakic

Sacha Lakic designed the Bubble for Roche Bobois, and it was first shown in 2014. It was inspired by natural, mineral forms: the sofa consists of soft, rounded volumes without edges. For these curves, Roche Bobois developed special stretch fabrics that fit snugly around the upholstery. The structure is made of solid fir, pine plywood and chipboard, and elastic straps give the seat its spring. The sofa is made by hand in Europe.

Bubble four-seater in blue fabric – floor model

This Bubble is the four-seater, the longest straight version of the sofa, upholstered in blue fabric. It was on display in a showroom and was never used in a home. The rounded back line makes it an eye-catcher even when it stands freely in the room. As the main sofa in a living room, it seats four people. The strong blue emphasises the sculptural shape and sets a distinct accent against light floors and simple furniture.

Seating comfort and space

The seat and back are padded with polyurethane foam in two densities, so on the Bubble you sit softly, as if enveloped. At 38 cm, the seat height is low; you sit lounge-style and tend to lean back. The sofa is around 2.63 m wide and 1.14 m deep. For a sofa of this length, a long wall or an open-plan living area is ideal. Leave around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of the sofa.

Elements and additions

According to Roche Bobois, the straight Bubble comes in four lengths: as a 2.5-seater, a three-seater, a large three-seater and a four-seater. There is also the curved version, Bubble Curve. The family also included the Bubble Mini, an armchair, a swivel armchair and a footstool. Roche Bobois still offers the Bubble sofa, and matching sofas can be added from there.

Caring for the fabric cover

Roche Bobois recommends dusting upholstery fabrics weekly with a very soft cloth. Avoid rough brushes, as they can roughen the surface and cause pilling. Soak up stains immediately with an absorbent cloth and dab rather than rub. Test cleaning products on an inconspicuous spot first. Direct sunlight and sources of heat can damage the fabric.

Why a Roche Bobois Bubble floor model?

Roche Bobois was founded in Paris in 1960 and, by its own account, has its furniture made in small European workshops. The Bubble is made there entirely by hand and only built to order. According to Roche Bobois, it is now an iconic model in the collection. As a floor model, this sofa was never used in a home. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
