About the model

Roche Bobois Mah Jong – seating system without a frame

The Mah Jong dates from 1971: Hans Hopfer created a sofa for Roche Bobois that consists solely of cushions. There is no frame and there are no feet. Three basic elements can be used to build anything from an armchair to a place to lie down. Roche Bobois describes the design as avant-garde in its day and an icon today. The Mah Jong is also known for its covers: Kenzo Takada, Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier have designed fabrics for it. The cushions are sewn by hand in a workshop in Italy.

Mah Jong three-seater in multicoloured fabric

This set is arranged as a three-seater and has a multicoloured fabric cover. Because the Mah Jong has no feet, the seat sits just above the floor. This suits rooms with rugs, low tables and space to stretch out. If you want to change the layout, simply rearrange the elements. In a few simple moves, the row of seats becomes a place to lie down for a cosy evening.

Seating comfort and space

The Mah Jong is a floor sofa. With a seat height of 32 cm, you sit lower than on most sofas, whose seats are 42 to 45 cm high. If you prefer to sit higher, place the elements on a Roche Bobois platform. One element takes up 95 × 95 cm, so a row of seats needs a long stretch of free wall. Allow around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.

Elements and additions

Today, the Mah Jong range also includes accessories: a small cushion and a lumbar cushion, filled with feathers and fibres. The straight back element is available with a headrest that you fold up by hand. For elements on platforms, Roche Bobois offers an anti-slip mat so that nothing slides out of place. The Mah Jong is also available as an outdoor version with fabrics for outside use, and as a bed.

Caring for the fabric cover

Because the elements are loose, you can lift them one at a time for cleaning and vacuum them all over. Use an upholstery nozzle with a soft brush and the lowest suction setting. Dab fresh stains with an absorbent cloth without rubbing. For a thorough clean of the designer fabrics, a specialist cleaning company is the right choice.

Why buy a pre-owned Roche Bobois Mah Jong?

For over fifty years, Roche Bobois has made the Mah Jong according to the same principle, with the cushions handmade in Italy. The Parisian company has reissued the sofa in new fabrics time and again, while the basic elements have stayed the same. A pre-owned Mah Jong is therefore not a discontinued model. You can rearrange it at any time or add more elements. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Mah Jong made of?

The Mah Jong is made up of three basic elements: a flat seat cushion, a straight back element and a corner element. Stacked or placed side by side, they form a sofa, an armchair or a place to lie down. There is no frame and there are no legs; the cushions lie on the floor or on a platform.

How is a Mah Jong cushion constructed?

According to the current Roche Bobois data sheet, the seat cushions are made of high-resilience polyurethane foam with a density of 37 kg/m³ and a layer of wadding on top. The back elements have a wooden structure. All pieces are upholstered, quilted and sewn by hand.

Where does the Mah Jong get its name?

Hans Hopfer named his seating system after the Chinese tile game mahjong. Just as the tiles in the game are laid out again and again, the upholstered elements can be put together into ever new shapes.

Can a Mah Jong be extended?

Yes, the system is open: you simply add more cushions. Roche Bobois still has the Mah Jong in its collection. Because the fabric collections change, it is worth checking the colour and pattern when adding elements.

Which layouts are possible with the Mah Jong?

According to Roche Bobois, the options range from a lounge armchair through a straight sofa and a corner sofa to a daybed. Because no element is fixed to another, you can change the layout as often as you like.

How do you care for the Mah Jong’s fabric covers?

Dust the cushions regularly; Roche Bobois recommends using a very soft brush once a week. Blot fresh stains with an absorbent cloth without rubbing. Leave a deep clean to a specialist.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

Roche Bobois was created in 1960, when the Roche and Chouchan families, who both sold furniture in Paris, produced their first joint catalogue. The Mah Jong by Hans Hopfer, from 1971, consists of three basic elements that can be placed side by side or stacked; its cover fabrics include designs by Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni. The Bubble by Sacha Lakic is made entirely by hand and covered in specially developed stretch fabrics. The furniture is made to order in small European workshops.
