About the model
Roche Bobois Mah Jong – modular sofa with eleven elements
The Mah Jong dates from 1971: Hans Hopfer created a sofa for Roche Bobois that consists solely of cushions. There is no frame and there are no feet. Three basic elements can be used to build anything from an armchair to a place to lie down. Roche Bobois describes the design as avant-garde in its day and an icon today. The Mah Jong is also known for its covers: Kenzo Takada, Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier have designed fabrics for it. The cushions are sewn by hand in a workshop in Italy.
Mah Jong corner sofa in multicoloured fabric with eleven elements
This Mah Jong set comprises eleven elements and is upholstered in fabrics by Missoni Home; the original label is still in place. Missoni is one of the fashion houses that have designed their own fabrics for the Mah Jong. Laid out as a corner sofa, the set seats four people. However, the elements can also form a long row of seats or several islands. The result is a large seating landscape for a living room, lounge or loft.
Seating comfort and space
Even as a large landscape, the Mah Jong keeps you seated close to the floor. The seat height is 32 cm, well below the usual 42 to 45 cm. Each of the eleven elements has a footprint of 95 × 95 cm. Laid out as a corner sofa against the wall, the set makes use of a corner of the room. Laid out as an island, it needs walking space all around, about 60 to 80 cm.
Elements and additions
A Mah Jong can be extended piece by piece. Roche Bobois still offers the system and lists seat cushions, back, corner and lounge elements individually. Wooden platforms in several widths and corner shapes raise the seats and leave room for books, trays or lamps. Coffee tables from the same line go with them. A small cushion and a lumbar cushion add to the seating comfort.
Caring for the fabric cover
Roche Bobois recommends dusting fabric covers weekly with a very soft brush. Hard brushes roughen the fibres and encourage pilling. Blot stains immediately with an absorbent cloth, dabbing rather than rubbing. Test cleaning products on a hidden area first. Do not place the cushions in strong sunlight or right next to a radiator.
Why buy a pre-owned Roche Bobois Mah Jong?
Roche Bobois, founded in Paris in 1960, has its furniture made in small European workshops. The Mah Jong was considered avant-garde when it was launched and, according to the manufacturer, is now an icon. Buying one pre-owned makes sense because the system remains timeless and every arrangement can be changed. New elements can still be added. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Which fabrics are available for the Mah Jong?
Roche Bobois keeps dressing the Mah Jong in fabrics by fashion designers, including designs by Missoni, Jean Paul Gaultier and Kenzo Takada. For the terrace and garden, there is also an outdoor version with its own covers.
Which layouts are possible with the Mah Jong?
According to Roche Bobois, the options range from a lounge armchair through a straight sofa and a corner sofa to a daybed. Because no element is fixed to another, you can change the layout as often as you like.
Are there platforms for the Mah Jong?
Yes. Roche Bobois offers wooden platforms from single-seat to two-seater size, plus corner and panoramic platforms. They are stained or lacquered and raise the seat. An anti-slip mat keeps the cushions in place on top.
How is a Mah Jong cushion constructed?
According to the current Roche Bobois data sheet, the seat cushions are made of high-resilience polyurethane foam with a density of 37 kg/m³ and a layer of wadding on top. The back elements have a wooden structure. All pieces are upholstered, quilted and sewn by hand.
What is it like to sit on the Mah Jong?
Low and relaxed, because the cushions lie directly on the floor without a frame. The seat cushions are constructed like a mattress. The wooden platforms from Roche Bobois add height and, according to the manufacturer, make sitting even more comfortable.
How do you clean the Mah Jong’s fabric covers?
Lift the elements one at a time and vacuum them with a soft brush nozzle on the lowest setting. Treat stains immediately, ideally by dabbing with an absorbent cloth. Test any cleaning product on a hidden area first.
Can I see the sofa before buying?
Yes – the sofa is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Roche Bobois was created in 1960, when the Roche and Chouchan families, who both sold furniture in Paris, produced their first joint catalogue. The Mah Jong by Hans Hopfer, from 1971, consists of three basic elements that can be placed side by side or stacked; its cover fabrics include designs by Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier and Missoni. The Bubble by Sacha Lakic is made entirely by hand and covered in specially developed stretch fabrics. The furniture is made to order in small European workshops.
