Muuto Rest – sofa with folded armrests

With the Rest, Anderssen & Voll wanted to create a sofa on which you can spend an entire day. The cushioning is very soft, the armrests are slightly folded and small pleats appear along the seams. In this way, the designers draw on ideas from Scandinavian design. Beneath the upholstery, a wooden frame and a steel base provide support, together with oak legs. Cold foam and feathers make up the filling, and Muuto calls the cushioning ultra-soft. The Rest was designed for Muuto in 2011.

This Rest sofa is a three-seater with a grey fabric cover and comes with a matching footstool measuring 100 × 80 cm. At 42 cm, the footstool is the same height as the sofa’s seat. Placed in front of the sofa, it extends the seat into a lying surface. Three people have plenty of room, and the sofa is suitable as the centrepiece of a living room.

Seating comfort and space

The Rest gives you a very soft seat, because feathers and cold foam give noticeably. According to Muuto, the seat is 60 cm deep. The seat height of 42 cm is standard. The sofa needs around 2.6 m of wall space and 92 cm of depth. With the footstool in front, the space needed in depth increases considerably. Beyond that, leave around 60 cm of walking space.

Elements and additions

Muuto still offers the Rest, today as a two-, three- and three-and-a-half-seater, with a chaise longue, as a corner sofa, an armchair and a pouf. The current models are upholstered with sinuous springs, cold foam and wadding and are slightly deeper. Additions may therefore differ from the construction of this sofa. Muuto offers spare parts for suitable products through its customer service.

Caring for the fabric cover

According to Muuto, the covers on the Rest’s seat and back cushions are removable and intended for dry cleaning. Dab stains gently with a lint-free cloth, with a little soapy water if needed, then with clean water. Pat damp spots dry with a clean tea towel. Massage and plump the feather cushions into shape regularly.
