Muuto In Situ – modular sofa with a deep seat

With the In Situ, the Norwegian designers Anderssen & Voll wanted to combine the generosity of classic Italian sofas with Scandinavian simplicity. The result is a modular sofa with sculptural lines, a deep seat and soft upholstery. Muuto describes it as more casual than some of the brand’s other sofas. Nine seat modules and loose cushions can be combined freely, and there are also 30 pre-planned configurations. A steel frame joins the modules to form a continuous seat. The sofa was launched in 2020.

This In Situ is a three-seater with a dark grey fabric cover and comes with a footstool. You can put your feet up on the footstool or use it as an extra seat. The dark grey emphasises the clean lines of the modular sofa. The set suits living rooms and reading corners where three people want to sit deep and soft.

Seating comfort and space

On the In Situ, you sit deep and soft; that is part of the design. The seat height of 40 cm is slightly below the usual 42 to 45 cm. The sofa needs around 1.98 m of wall space and 1.07 m of depth. The footstool needs extra space in front or to the side. Beyond that, allow around 60 to 80 cm of walking space so that nobody has to step over anyone’s feet.

Elements and additions

Alongside modules with an armrest, centre modules, corners and open ends, Muuto’s In Situ range also includes an ottoman module and longue elements. There are nine modules in total, from which 30 pre-planned configurations and your own variations can be put together. Loose cushions in two sizes are available separately. Muuto offers spare parts for suitable products through its customer service.

Caring for the fabric cover

Vacuum the dark grey cover regularly with the upholstery nozzle so that no dust settles in the weave. According to Muuto, dab fresh stains with a lint-free cloth wrung out in warm water. Treat stubborn marks with a little washing-up liquid and then dab with clean water. The fabric manufacturer’s instructions for the specific fabric also apply.

Why buy a pre-owned Muuto In Situ?

Since 2006, the Copenhagen brand Muuto has worked with designers who reinterpret the Scandinavian tradition. The In Situ has been in the range since 2020 and is still available. Bought pre-owned, it remains adaptable: modules can be rearranged and added. A footstool is already included with this sofa. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
