About the model
Muuto In Situ – modular sofa with a sculptural line
The In Situ is a generous modular sofa by Muuto, designed by Anderssen & Voll from Oslo. It was launched in 2020. Muuto calls it a sofa with sculptural lines, deep comfort and a soft seat. The joints between the elements disappear behind a profile that runs along the front. Beneath the cover are a wooden construction with foam and upholstery wadding and a frame made of powder-coated steel. The loose cushions have a foam core with wadding.
In Situ two-seater in grey fabric
This In Situ is a two-seater with a light grey fabric cover. As a compact combination, it fits into smaller living rooms, a study or a reading corner. Two people sit deep and soft side by side. As the In Situ is made up of modules, the two-seater can later be extended into a corner sofa or a longer combination. The light grey keeps the room feeling open.
Seating comfort and space
The In Situ is a sofa for leaning back: Muuto describes the seat as deep and soft. With a seat height of 40 cm, you sit slightly lower than on many sofas. The two-seater needs around 1.98 m of wall space and is 1.07 m deep, so it also fits into smaller rooms. According to Muuto, each additional seat module is just under one metre wide. Leave around 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of the sofa.
Elements and additions
With further modules, the two-seater becomes a longer combination or a corner sofa. For this, Muuto offers centre and corner modules, open ends, longue elements and an ottoman. A steel frame connects the modules; frame sections and linking brackets are also available individually. Loose cushions in two sizes can be added if you wish.
Caring for the fabric cover
For the light grey fabric, the rule is: clean it often and gently rather than rarely and vigorously. Vacuum the cover regularly. Dab stains with a lint-free cloth wrung out in warm water, with a little washing-up liquid if needed. Then dab with clean water and let the spot dry. For details, Muuto refers to the fabric manufacturer’s instructions.
Why buy a pre-owned Muuto In Situ?
Muuto comes from Copenhagen and has its designs tested for strength and stability by independent institutes. The In Situ adds modularity to this: a pre-owned two-seater is not an end point but can be extended with further modules into a larger combination. The system is still in Muuto’s range. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the idea behind the In Situ?
The designers wanted to combine the function of a modular sofa with simple, elegant lines and deep comfort. As their model, they name the generosity of classic Italian sofas, combined with Scandinavian simplicity.
How long has the In Situ been around?
Muuto launched the In Situ in spring 2020. It was designed by Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll, who share a studio in Oslo. The duo also designed the Outline and the Rest for Muuto.
Which modules are available for the In Situ?
Nine: elements with an armrest on the left and right, a centre module, an ottoman, a corner, two open ends and two longue elements with an armrest. The loose cushions are not part of the modules and are added separately.
What is it like to sit on the In Situ?
Deep and soft. Muuto states a seat depth of 74 cm, which invites you to lean back and put your feet up. If you prefer to sit more upright, place loose cushions behind your back.
How do you care for the In Situ’s steel frame?
According to Muuto, a damp cloth is enough, with a little washing-up liquid if needed. Then wipe it dry. Avoid abrasive cleaners so that the powder coating is not damaged.
How is the In Situ constructed?
The In Situ consists of modules joined by a powder-coated steel frame. Muuto offers nine seat modules and loose cushions; from these, you can create your own variations or one of the 30 pre-planned configurations.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Muuto is a Copenhagen design company founded in 2006 by Peter Bonnén and Kristian Byrge; its name comes from the Finnish word “muutos”, meaning change or new perspective. Since the first sofa in 2011, the Oslo studio Anderssen & Voll has designed the brand’s sofas, including Outline, Rest and In Situ. Outline reinterprets Scandinavian sofas of the 1960s, while on the modular In Situ a steel profile along the seat and back hides the joins between the elements.
