Muuto Rest – soft sofa with feather filling

Anderssen & Voll designed the Rest for Muuto in 2011. According to the designers, deep comfort and friendly lines are meant to make the sofa feel warm and inviting. It is intended as a sofa on which you can spend an entire day. Typical features are the small pleats at the seams and the folded armrest. A wooden frame sits on a steel base, and the legs are made of oak. They came in a natural finish or stained black or grey. Cold foam and feathers make up the filling; Muuto describes the cushioning as ultra-soft.

This Rest sofa is a two-seater with a grey fabric cover and comes with a footstool. You can put your feet up on the footstool or use it as an extra seat. The grey gives the soft pleats and the folded armrest a calm look. The sofa suits living rooms and reading corners where two people want to sit soft and deep.

Seating comfort and space

The Rest is a decidedly soft sofa: feathers and cold foam give noticeably as you sit down. According to Muuto, the seat is 60 cm deep, so you sit deep and lean against the backrest. The seat height of 40 cm is slightly below the usual 42 to 45 cm. The sofa needs around two metres of wall space and 92 cm of depth, plus the footstool in front of it. Leave around 60 to 80 cm of walking space.

Elements and additions

According to Muuto, the Rest family includes two-, three- and three-and-a-half-seaters, a chaise longue, a corner sofa, an armchair and a pouf. Muuto builds the current models with sinuous springs, cold foam and wadding, and they are also slightly deeper. New parts may therefore differ from the construction of this sofa. According to the 2023 data sheet, the stained legs are also available separately.

Caring for the fabric cover

The covers of the seat and back cushions can be removed and dry-cleaned. Dab small, non-greasy stains with a lint-free cloth wrung out in warm water. Because the cushions are filled with feathers, you should shake them up and plump them into shape regularly, just like an ordinary feather cushion. This way, the sofa keeps its shape and seating comfort.

Why buy a pre-owned Muuto Rest?

Muuto was founded in Copenhagen in 2006 and works with designers who reinterpret the Scandinavian tradition. A pre-owned Rest is worthwhile because the cushion covers can be removed and cleaned. Shaking up the feather filling keeps it in shape. According to the data sheet, the Rest was tested for strength, durability and stability to European and American standards. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
