About the model
Ligne Roset Ploum – sofa with pouffe for every position
With the Ploum, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec set out to create a very comfortable, contemporary sofa, and they imagined it as a ripe, luscious fruit. Ligne Roset presented it at the imm furniture fair in January 2011. Two materials define the sofa: a stretchy knitted cover, which the designers see as a symbol of today’s lifestyle, and very soft foam. Both are supported by a frame of tubular steel, wire and steel mesh; even the feet are covered.
Ploum Medium two-seater in blue fabric with footstool
This Ploum Medium is a two-seater with a high backrest, upholstered in blue fabric. ‘Medium’ is Ligne Roset’s name for the middle one of the three high-back widths. It comes with the matching pouffe from the series. As the pouffe and sofa are the same height, a continuous lounging area forms in front of the sofa; placed on its own, the pouffe is an extra seat. Blue has a calm effect and goes with white, grey and light wood.
Seating comfort and space
The Bultex foam seat core provides support, while the super-soft top layer and the stretchy cover let you sink in gently. According to Ligne Roset, the upholstery adapts to the weight and shape of the body. At 38 cm, you sit lower than on most sofas, which measure 42 to 45 cm. The sofa needs a good two metres along the wall and 1.1 m in depth; with the pouffe pushed in front, just under two metres. Leave 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.
Elements and additions
The Ploum has no mechanism; it is extended through the series. Ligne Roset makes it with a high backrest in widths of 170, 203 and 250 cm. With a low backrest, it comes in 166 and 203 cm, plus the pouffe. The pouffe for this sofa is built exactly like the sofas and has the same seat height. The series is still in the collection.
Caring for the fabric cover
Do not remove the cover of the Ploum yourself: Ligne Roset states that it can only be taken off by an upholsterer. For everyday care, vacuum the fabric with a soft upholstery nozzle so that no dust collects in the quilting. Dab fresh stains with a damp cloth rather than rubbing them. For a deep clean, Ligne Roset recommends a professional upholstery cleaner.
Why buy a pre-owned Ligne Roset Ploum?
Ligne Roset has been making furniture on the Rhône since 1860. According to the manufacturer, it is made in a large workshop in Briord, where most of the work is done by hand. Ligne Roset has made the Ploum from 2011 to this day, so a pre-owned one is a current model. According to the manufacturer, the upholstery quickly returns to its shape after being sat on. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Ploum pouffe for?
The pouffe is built exactly like the sofas and has the same seat height. Pushed up to the sofa, it extends the seat into a daybed; standing on its own, it is an extra seat or a footrest. At 21 kg, it is easy to move around.
What is it like to sit in the Ploum?
Soft and enveloping. According to Ligne Roset, the whole body rests on a soft, inviting surface, and every position is possible, from sitting upright to lying down. The seat core is firmer than the back and the top layer, so the seat still gives support.
What does Medium mean for the Ploum?
This is what Ligne Roset calls the 203 cm wide version in France and the UK, available with a high or a low backrest. In Germany, it is called the ‘large 2-seater’. The 170 and 166 cm versions are narrower; only the 250 cm high-back version is wider.
How is the Ploum upholstered?
Cores of Bultex foam sit on a frame of tubular steel, wire and steel mesh. The seat core has a density of 48 kg/m³, the back 26 kg/m³. On top lies a super-soft contact layer. This makes the seat noticeably firmer than the backrest, while the surface is soft all over.
Can the cover of the Ploum be removed?
Only by a professional. The stretchy cover is double-layer quilted and held by quilting points; Ligne Roset states that it can be removed by an upholsterer. You should not take it off yourself; for a deep clean, an upholstery workshop is the right place to go.
How did the idea for the Ploum come about?
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec wanted a particularly comfortable, contemporary sofa and imagined it as a ripe, luscious fruit. For them, the stretchy fabric is a symbol of today’s lifestyle. Ligne Roset first showed the Ploum at the imm furniture fair in January 2011.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Ligne Roset is a French family company, founded by Antoine Roset in the Ain department in 1860; it has made upholstered furniture since 1936. The brand name dates from 1973, the year of Michel Ducaroy's Togo. On the Ploum by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (2011), a stretch cover wraps seat, back and armrests in one piece. Pierre Paulin's Pumpkin was designed in 1971 for the Pompidous' private apartment in the Élysée Palace. Its seating is still made in its own workshops in south-eastern France.
