About the model
Ligne Roset Ploum – comfort from stretch fabric and foam
For Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the Ploum was a study in comfort: they wanted a very comfortable sofa for today. Ligne Roset presented it at the imm furniture fair in January 2011 and still makes it today. What makes it special is the combination of very soft foam and a stretchy, double-layer quilted knitted cover. Beneath it, a frame of tubular steel, wire and steel mesh supports the rounded shape, and even the feet are covered.
Ploum three-seater in red fabric
This Ploum has a cover in red fabric and the high backrest. It corresponds to the largest Ploum version, which Ligne Roset makes slightly asymmetrical: on the right, with a slightly higher backrest and a slightly deeper seat. The strong red makes the sofa the focal point of the room. The soft, generous surface invites you to stretch out, in the living room as well as in a large reading room.
Seating comfort and space
Soft, but supportive: the Bultex foam seat core is firmer, the back and contact layer are super-soft, and the knitted cover stretches with you. Ligne Roset describes how your back and head find the same soft contact everywhere. The seat height of 39 cm is below the usual 42 to 45 cm. Allow around 2.5 m along the wall and 1.2 m of depth, plus 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front.
Elements and additions
The Ploum does without any mechanism. Ligne Roset still offers the series: three high-back versions from 170 to 250 cm wide, two low-back versions and a pouffe. The pouffe is 110 cm wide, 80 cm deep and as high as the seat; placed in front of the sofa, it creates a large lounging area. It can be added through specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
According to Ligne Roset, the quilted cover should only be removed by a professional. Vacuum dust with a soft upholstery nozzle, including from the hollows of the quilting. Soak up liquids immediately with an absorbent cloth and then dab, without rubbing. Test stain removers on a hidden spot first. A place out of direct sunlight helps preserve the strong red.
Why buy a pre-owned Ligne Roset Ploum?
Ligne Roset has been making furniture on the Rhône since 1860, today in Briord, and describes building sofas as a demanding craft. The manufacturer has had the Ploum in its collection since 2011, so a pre-owned piece is not a discontinued model. The steel frame and Bultex cores give the soft sofa a solid base, and an upholsterer can remove the cover. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is it like to sit in the Ploum?
Soft and enveloping. According to Ligne Roset, the whole body rests on a soft, inviting surface, and every position is possible, from sitting upright to lying down. The seat core is firmer than the back and the top layer, so the seat still gives support.
Is the large Ploum symmetrical?
No, and that is part of the design. On the largest version, the right backrest is slightly higher and the right seat slightly deeper, and the zip on the back is off-centre as well. That is how the designers wanted it.
What is the Ploum pouffe for?
The pouffe is built exactly like the sofas and has the same seat height. Pushed up to the sofa, it extends the seat into a daybed; standing on its own, it is an extra seat or a footrest. At 21 kg, it is easy to move around.
How do you care for the fabric cover of the Ploum?
Vacuum the cover regularly with a soft upholstery nozzle so that no dust collects in the quilting. Dab fresh stains with a damp cloth rather than rubbing them. Test stain removers on a hidden spot first.
How did the idea for the Ploum come about?
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec wanted a particularly comfortable, contemporary sofa and imagined it as a ripe, luscious fruit. For them, the stretchy fabric is a symbol of today’s lifestyle. Ligne Roset first showed the Ploum at the imm furniture fair in January 2011.
Which sizes does the Ploum come in?
Ligne Roset makes the Ploum with a high backrest in three widths from 170 to 250 cm. With a low backrest, it comes in two widths, 166 and 203 cm. There is also a pouffe that complements each of the sofas.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Ligne Roset is a French family company, founded by Antoine Roset in the Ain department in 1860; it has made upholstered furniture since 1936. The brand name dates from 1973, the year of Michel Ducaroy's Togo. On the Ploum by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (2011), a stretch cover wraps seat, back and armrests in one piece. Pierre Paulin's Pumpkin was designed in 1971 for the Pompidous' private apartment in the Élysée Palace. Its seating is still made in its own workshops in south-eastern France.
