About the model

Ligne Roset Ploum – large sofa like a soft nest

On the Ploum, the whole body rests on a soft, inviting surface. That is how Ligne Roset describes the sofa, which Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec presented in 2011. Every position is possible, from sitting upright to lying down, and your back and head find the same soft contact everywhere. This is made possible by a frame of tubular steel and steel mesh, wrapped in Bultex foam in several densities and a stretchy, quilted knitted cover.

Ploum three-seater in blue fabric

This Ploum has a cover in blue fabric and the high backrest; in size, it corresponds to the largest version in the range. Ligne Roset deliberately makes this size asymmetrical: on the right, the backrest is slightly higher and the seat slightly deeper, and the zip at the back is off-centre. With plenty of surface and soft upholstery, the sofa is a place to stretch out, for film nights or long hours of reading.

Seating comfort and space

In the seat, a firmer core of Bultex foam provides support, while the back and top layer are much softer. So you sink in softly, and the stretchy cover follows your movements. At 38 cm, the seat is lower than the usual 42 to 45 cm, which is good for leaning back. The sofa needs around 2.5 m of wall and 1.24 m of depth, and you should leave 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.

Elements and additions

The Ploum has no functions; its comfort lies in the upholstery. Besides this largest version, the series includes two narrower high-back versions, two low-back versions and a pouffe. Ligne Roset builds the pouffe like the sofas, from tubular steel, Bultex foam and double-layer knitted fabric. It has the same seat height and can be added through specialist retailers. With it, a continuous lounging area forms in front of the sofa.

Caring for the fabric cover

An upholsterer can remove the knitted cover, but it is not meant to be taken off by you. So care for it directly on the sofa. Vacuum it regularly with a soft nozzle, especially around the quilting points. Dab fresh stains with a damp cloth rather than rubbing them. For larger stains, Ligne Roset recommends a professional upholstery cleaner; it is best to avoid direct sunlight.

Why buy a pre-owned Ligne Roset Ploum?

Ligne Roset, the French manufacturer, has had the Ploum in its collection since 2011 – so a pre-owned sofa is a current design. Beneath the soft cover is a solid construction of tubular steel, steel mesh and Bultex foam. An upholsterer can remove the cover, for example for a thorough clean. The pouffe can be added through specialist retailers. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

Is the large Ploum symmetrical?

No, and that is part of the design. On the largest version, the right backrest is slightly higher and the right seat slightly deeper, and the zip on the back is off-centre as well. That is how the designers wanted it.

What is it like to sit in the Ploum?

Soft and enveloping. According to Ligne Roset, the whole body rests on a soft, inviting surface, and every position is possible, from sitting upright to lying down. The seat core is firmer than the back and the top layer, so the seat still gives support.

How is the Ploum upholstered?

Cores of Bultex foam sit on a frame of tubular steel, wire and steel mesh. The seat core has a density of 48 kg/m³, the back 26 kg/m³. On top lies a super-soft contact layer. This makes the seat noticeably firmer than the backrest, while the surface is soft all over.

Which sizes does the Ploum come in?

Ligne Roset makes the Ploum with a high backrest in three widths from 170 to 250 cm. With a low backrest, it comes in two widths, 166 and 203 cm. There is also a pouffe that complements each of the sofas.

Can the cover of the Ploum be removed?

Only by a professional. The stretchy cover is double-layer quilted and held by quilting points; Ligne Roset states that it can be removed by an upholsterer. You should not take it off yourself; for a deep clean, an upholstery workshop is the right place to go.

What is special about the cover of the Ploum?

It is made of a stretchy knitted fabric that is double-layer quilted and held in place by quilting points. According to Ligne Roset, it gives the upholstery room to adapt to the body and then quickly return to its shape. The quilting is reminiscent of button tufting.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

Ligne Roset is a French family company, founded by Antoine Roset in the Ain department in 1860; it has made upholstered furniture since 1936. The brand name dates from 1973, the year of Michel Ducaroy's Togo. On the Ploum by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (2011), a stretch cover wraps seat, back and armrests in one piece. Pierre Paulin's Pumpkin was designed in 1971 for the Pompidous' private apartment in the Élysée Palace. Its seating is still made in its own workshops in south-eastern France.
