About the model
Ligne Roset Ruché – quilt on a beech frame
Inga Sempé designed the Ruché for Ligne Roset, and it was presented at the imm furniture fair in January 2010. She wanted a sofa raised off the floor on a simple, delicate structure and carrying a comfortable seat; she was inspired by rocking seats. The solid beech frame is reinforced with two steel frames. Over it lies a quilt with a square grid and interrupted seams, between which the fabric puffs up. Hence the name: ruché refers to a gathered, pleated fabric.
Ruché two-seater in green fabric
This Ruché is a two-seater upholstered in green fabric and corresponds to Ligne Roset’s large 2-seater. The armrests are as high as the backrest, so you can also sit sideways and stretch out your legs. The slim beech legs visibly lift the sofa off the floor, which makes it look light. Green brings a calm, natural colour to a living room or study.
Seating comfort and space
The seat has a stable construction: Pullmaflex steel springs and two layers of Bultex foam, topped by the quilt with wadding and very soft foam. So you sit rather firmly, but the surface is soft. At 46 cm, the seat is above the usual 42 to 45 cm, so you sit upright and get up easily. The sofa needs 1.7 m along the wall and 0.9 m of depth. Leave 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.
Elements and additions
The Ruché has no mechanism. Ligne Roset makes it as a large 2-seater and a 3-seater, both also available as low-back versions with two wedge cushions. There is also a méridienne with a side shelf, an armchair and a footstool. For sofas with a high backrest, the feather-filled wedge cushions with a removable cover are available separately. The series is still in the collection, and the family also includes beds and a bedside table.
Caring for the fabric cover
According to Ligne Roset, the cover of the Ruché is fully removable. For a deep clean, take it off and have it professionally cleaned, as Ligne Roset recommends for upholstery fabrics. For everyday care, vacuum the quilt with a soft upholstery nozzle, including along the seams, and dab stains with a damp cloth. Wipe the beech legs with a barely damp cloth.
Why buy a pre-owned Ligne Roset Ruché?
Ligne Roset has been making furniture on the Rhône since 1860, and in Briord much of it is made by hand. The manufacturer has made the Ruché since 2010 on a solid beech frame with steel reinforcement and steel springs in the seat. As the cover is fully removable, it can be cleaned thoroughly. The design is still in the collection today. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the Ruché get its name?
In French, ruché refers to a gathered, pleated fabric, as familiar from ruffles. On the sofa, the cover puffs up between the interrupted quilting seams and so recalls a ruffle.
What is the idea behind the Ruché?
Inga Sempé wanted a sofa raised off the floor on a simple, delicate structure and carrying a comfortable seat. She was inspired by rocking seats. The result is a slim beech frame with a quilt laid over it.
How firm is the Ruché to sit on?
Fairly firm, with a soft surface. The seat is built with Pullmaflex steel springs and two layers of Bultex foam, topped by the quilt with polyester wadding and very soft foam. The back rests on a metal mesh, and the armrests have elastic padding.
Can you sit sideways on the Ruché?
Yes. The armrests are just as high as the backrest. You can sit sideways, stretch out your legs and lean against the armrest, which is sprung with elastic inserts.
Which versions of the Ruché are available?
Ligne Roset makes the Ruché as a large 2-seater and as a 3-seater, both also with a low backrest and two wedge cushions. There is also a méridienne with a side shelf, an armchair and a footstool. The beech legs come in natural or tinted anthracite, red or petrol blue.
Is the cover of the Ruché removable?
Yes, Ligne Roset states that the cover is fully removable. So the quilt with polyester wadding and very soft foam can be taken off and cleaned. For upholstery fabrics, Ligne Roset recommends professional cleaning.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Ligne Roset is a French family company, founded by Antoine Roset in the Ain department in 1860; it has made upholstered furniture since 1936. The brand name dates from 1973, the year of Michel Ducaroy's Togo. On the Ploum by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (2011), a stretch cover wraps seat, back and armrests in one piece. Pierre Paulin's Pumpkin was designed in 1971 for the Pompidous' private apartment in the Élysée Palace. Its seating is still made in its own workshops in south-eastern France.
