About the model

Ligne Roset Confluences – seating range built like a puzzle

Confluences is a seating range that Philippe Nigro developed for Ligne Roset in 2009; it marked the start of the long collaboration between designer and manufacturer. The seat rests on three layers of panels arranged crosswise. The back sits on a welded steel frame suspended from a metal grid. The cushions are made of Bultex foam with polyester wadding, and the lumbar cushions are filled with pure duck down. The black polypropylene feet remain invisible.

Confluences three-seater in blue fabric

This Confluences consists of three elements upholstered in blue fabric and offers three seats. The corner is on the left, seen from the front. Backrests of different heights and overlapping seats give the sofa a lively silhouette that looks different from every side. The blue sets a strong accent. The shape shows to best advantage as the main sofa in a living room or as an eye-catcher in an open-plan space.

Seating comfort and space

You sit on Bultex foam, which Ligne Roset uses in different densities; polyester wadding makes the surface soft, and the range's down-filled lumbar cushions support your back. At 38 cm, the seat is below the usual 42 to 45 cm, which gives a relaxed, low posture. The sofa needs around 2.5 m along the wall and 1.3 m of depth at the corner. Allow 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front of it.

Elements and additions

Confluences has no mechanism; its versatility lies in its elements. Ligne Roset made two- and three-seaters, four-seaters with lounger elements, an armchair, a vis-à-vis and the sofa ‘Toi et moi’. With a matching cushion, an aluminium table at the end of the sofa became an armrest. The range can no longer be ordered new: Ligne Roset does not list it in its current overview of Philippe Nigro’s designs.

Caring for the fabric cover

Because all parts can be taken apart and the covers removed, you can easily reach every spot. Vacuum the fabric regularly with the upholstery nozzle, especially at the transitions between the elements. Dab fresh stains with a damp cloth. According to Ligne Roset, a deep clean is best left to a professional upholstery cleaner; test any products on a hidden spot first.

Why buy a pre-owned Ligne Roset Confluences?

Confluences marked the start of the long collaboration in 2009 between Philippe Nigro and Ligne Roset, a French manufacturer that has been making furniture since 1860. The range was made in France. As Ligne Roset no longer offers it, the way to this design is through a pre-owned piece. The covers are removable and the elements can be taken apart. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

Which elements belonged to the Confluences range?

Ligne Roset made two-, three- and four-seaters, some with lounger elements, plus an armchair, a vis-à-vis and the small sofa ‘Toi et moi’. With a cushion, an aluminium side table could be used as an armrest.

Was the Confluences also available in several colours?

Yes. Each element was available in one or several colours, and Philippe Nigro himself proposed 27 colour combinations. The nuances of colour emphasise how the seats flow into one another and make every sofa a little different.

How do the elements of the Confluences interlock?

The elements have different volumes and back heights and interlock like puzzle pieces; Ligne Roset compares this to yin and yang. Their seats overlap. There is deliberately no symmetry – even left-hand and right-hand versions differ slightly.

Is the Confluences still available new?

Not from Ligne Roset at present: Confluences is no longer listed in the current overview of Philippe Nigro’s designs. If you want to add to the sofa, you will therefore need to look for matching elements pre-owned.

Are the covers of the Confluences removable?

Yes, all covers are removable and all parts can be taken apart. This lets you reach every spot for cleaning and move the sofa in individual elements. For a deep clean, Ligne Roset recommends a specialist.

How do you care for the fabric cover of the Confluences?

Vacuum the fabric regularly with the upholstery nozzle, including at the transitions between the elements. Dab fresh stains with a damp cloth rather than rubbing them. Test stain removers on a hidden spot first.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

Ligne Roset is a French family company, founded by Antoine Roset in the Ain department in 1860; it has made upholstered furniture since 1936. The brand name dates from 1973, the year of Michel Ducaroy's Togo. On the Ploum by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (2011), a stretch cover wraps seat, back and armrests in one piece. Pierre Paulin's Pumpkin was designed in 1971 for the Pompidous' private apartment in the Élysée Palace. Its seating is still made in its own workshops in south-eastern France.
