About the model

Ligne Roset Prado – seating island with movable back cushions

Christian Werner designed the Prado for Ligne Roset, and it was presented at the imm furniture fair in January 2014. Instead of a fixed backrest, it has an oversized seat and individual back cushions that you place wherever you like. They stay in place thanks to their own weight and a non-slip underside, even on the floor. Werner wanted to rethink the sofa as a space of complete freedom. The seat rests on wooden panels with polyether foam and elastic webbing, supported by a base of black-lacquered steel.

Prado two-seater in grey fabric

This Prado is a two-seater upholstered in grey fabric and corresponds to the large 2-seater with a depth of 100 cm. You place the back cushions wherever you need them. Along one long side, they create a classic sofa; along both sides, a seating island for the middle of the room. You can also put them aside altogether. The calm grey suits the clean shape. The Prado works as a living-room sofa as well as in a guest room.

Seating comfort and space

The seat rests on elastic webbing and a core of Bultex foam, which creates an evenly supportive surface. The back cushions are made of firm moulded foam with a comfort layer of goose feathers. The seat height of 41 cm is close to the usual 42 to 45 cm. As the seat is 100 cm deep, you determine the seat depth by where you place the cushions. The Prado needs two metres of wall and one metre of depth, plus 60 to 80 cm of walking space in front.

Functions and additions

Simply lift the back cushions and set them down somewhere else; there are no fastenings. For guests, take the cushions off and turn the seat cushion over: its underside is covered in mattress ticking. To go with it, Ligne Roset offers a white fitted cotton sheet. The series includes further sizes up to a square sofa, angular and round footstools and optional armrest cushions; the Prado is still in the collection.

Caring for the fabric cover

Vacuum the seat and cushions regularly with the upholstery nozzle. Dab fresh stains with a damp cloth rather than rubbing them, and test stain removers on a hidden spot first. According to Ligne Roset, a deep clean is best left to a professional upholstery cleaner. If you use the Prado as a guest bed, a fitted sheet protects the sleeping surface. Pat the feather-topped back cushions back into shape from time to time.

Why buy a pre-owned Ligne Roset Prado?

Ligne Roset has been making furniture on the Rhône since 1860, and in Briord much of it is made by hand. The manufacturer has offered the Prado since 2014, now in several sizes and as the quilted version Prado 2. The construction is simple: wooden panels, webbing and foam, and cushions without any mechanism. There is little that can wear out, and the cushions can be rearranged again and again. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

How do the back cushions of the Prado stay in place without fastenings?

Through their weight and their underside. The core of firm moulded foam is moulded onto a metal insert, and the underside is non-slip. This keeps the cushions where you put them, on the seat or temporarily on the floor.

How does the Prado become a guest bed?

Take off the back cushions and turn the seat cushion over. Its underside is covered in mattress ticking and serves as a sleeping surface. Ligne Roset offers a white fitted cotton sheet in the matching size to go with it.

How is the Prado upholstered?

The seat rests on wooden panels with polyether foam and elastic webbing. The seat cushion has a core of Bultex foam with a density of 36 kg/m³. The back cushions are made of moulded foam with a density of 60 kg/m³ on a metal insert, topped by a comfort layer of goose feathers in chambers.

Which sizes and additions are available for the Prado?

Ligne Roset makes the Prado as a large 2-seater with a depth of 100 or 120 cm, as a 3-seater and as a square sofa. There are also square, rectangular and round footstools as well as optional armrest cushions with a Bultex foam core.

What is the idea behind the Prado?

Christian Werner wanted to rethink the sofa as a space of complete freedom. Instead of a fixed backrest, there are freely movable cushions that you arrange to suit your mood: for sitting, leaning back, lying down or sitting face to face. This way, the sofa adapts to everyday life.

Can the Prado be placed freestanding in the room?

Yes. If you place back cushions along both long sides, you create a sofa that can be sat on from two sides. This allows the Prado to stand as a seating island in the middle of the room or to divide an open-plan living area.

Can I see the piece before buying?

Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.

Ligne Roset is a French family company, founded by Antoine Roset in the Ain department in 1860; it has made upholstered furniture since 1936. The brand name dates from 1973, the year of Michel Ducaroy's Togo. On the Ploum by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec (2011), a stretch cover wraps seat, back and armrests in one piece. Pierre Paulin's Pumpkin was designed in 1971 for the Pompidous' private apartment in the Élysée Palace. Its seating is still made in its own workshops in south-eastern France.
