About the model

De Sede DS 47 – a sofa made of thick leather

De Sede launched the DS 47 in the 1970s, and it is still part of the range today. Its characteristic features are the thick leather that covers the entire body and a seat that can be pulled forwards a little. Many DS 47 sofas are covered in neck leather, whose growth wrinkles show the natural structure of the hide. Where two sections of hide meet, so-called folded seams are formed – according to de Sede, handwork that requires a great deal of strength. The sofa is heavy and solidly built.

DS 47 three-seater in black leather

This DS 47 is a three-seater with a black leather cover and seats three. Black leather looks calm and clean and suits a living room just as well as an office or a reception area. The low, wide body brings a sense of calm to the room and goes well with a rug or a low coffee table. Over time, the leather develops its own patina. It is one of a kind.

Seating comfort and space

According to de Sede, the DS 47's padding combines several layers of foam of different firmness, topped with wadding: the seat is supportive and soft at the same time. At 38 cm, you sit lower than on most sofas – relaxed, but getting up takes a little more effort. The sofa takes up 1.81 m of wall space and 1.1 m of depth. If you pull out the seat, allow a little extra room at the front – ideally around 80 cm of walkway.

Functions and additions

The function is simple: you pull the seat forwards to increase the seat depth, while the back stays in place. With the seat pushed back in, you sit upright again. De Sede still offers the DS 47 as a sofa, armchair and footstool. Through specialist retailers, de Sede also offers reupholstering and new padding – according to the manufacturer, this is possible in many cases.

Caring for the leather cover

De Sede advises always testing care products on a hidden area first and never applying them directly to the leather, but to a soft cloth. Work over large areas from seam to seam, without rubbing hard. If the cloth picks up a lot of the leather's colour rather than dirt, the product is unsuitable. A slightly damp cotton cloth is enough for dusting; solvents and shoe polish do not belong on leather.

Why buy a pre-owned De Sede DS 47?

De Sede has its roots in saddlery and has been making upholstered furniture in Klingnau since 1965. The DS 47 shows what that means: thick leather, a simple shape and solid construction. Leather this thick copes well with everyday life and develops a patina over the years. Because de Sede offers reupholstering and spare parts through specialist retailers, the sofa can be used for a long time. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.

Frequently asked questions

How does the leather of a DS 47 age?

Leather becomes softer with use and develops a patina in frequently used areas. Regular care keeps it supple. Slight variations in colour and grain are part of the natural material and make each piece unique.

How does the DS 47's pull-out seat work?

The seat can be pulled forwards while the backrest stays in place. This increases the seat depth so you can lean back further or stretch out your legs. With the seat pushed back in, you sit upright again.

Why is the leather of the DS 47 so thick?

Today, de Sede uses NECK leather up to 5 mm thick for the DS 47, which comes from particularly strong bulls. The manufacturer describes it as extremely hard-wearing, supple to the touch and pleasant against the skin.

How long has the DS 47 been around?

The design dates from the 1970s, and de Sede still makes the DS 47 today. The company manufactures in Klingnau in northern Switzerland, close to the German border, and has its roots in saddlery.

How is the DS 47 upholstered?

According to de Sede, the seat and back consist of several layers of foam of different firmness, topped with a layer of wadding. This produces a seat that is supportive and soft at the same time. The armrests are made of moulded foam and are also padded with wadding.

What is neck leather on the DS 47?

Neck leather comes from the neck area of the cow. It is sturdy and shows growth wrinkles – natural lines that run differently on every hide. For new DS 47s, de Sede uses NECK leather up to 5 mm thick.

About the brand

All De Sede in stock

De Sede goes back to a small upholstery workshop that Ernst Lüthy founded in Klingnau, Switzerland, in 1962; in 1965 it became de Sede AG. The company is known for handcrafted leather furniture, and its models carry numbers. For the DS-47 by the in-house design team, de Sede has used thick neck leather (NECK) since 1976; on Hugo de Ruiter's DS-167 the backrest slides around the entire seat. Mathias Hoffmann's DS-102 dates from 1998.
