About the model
De Sede DS 167 – a sofa with a movable backrest
Hugo de Ruiter designed the DS 167 for de Sede as a slimmer, more delicate development of the DS-164 and DS-165 series. De Sede calls it a seating island with a sliding backrest. The backrest can be moved freely around the seat; a plastic plate bends into the necessary curves as you do so. The seat depth changes depending on its position. The modular system stands on slim feet of polished stainless steel, and de Sede also calls the series DS-167 Island.
DS 167 two-seater in brown leather – floor model
This DS 167 is a two-seater with a brown leather cover. It was on display and has never been used in a home. The sofa is unusually deep and offers plenty of room for leaning back, stretching out and lying down. Because the backrest can be moved, you can also place it freely in the room and use it from several sides. Brown leather looks warm and goes well with wood and natural tones.
Seating comfort and space
According to de Sede, the seat and back cushions consist of several layers of foam of different firmness, with an extra-soft core and a layer of wadding. The seat feels soft but supportive. With a seat height of 40 cm, you sit slightly lower than usual. The sofa is two metres wide and 1.5 m deep, so it needs roughly the floor space of a small bed. Leave 60 to 80 cm clear all round if you use it from several sides.
Functions and additions
You place the backrest at the point on the seat where you want to lean back; the plastic plate inside follows the curves. Further forward, it gives a shallower seat for sitting upright; further back, room to lean back. De Sede still makes the DS 167 in several sofa versions, and now also as an outdoor version. De Sede specialist retailers can arrange reupholstering and spare parts.
Caring for the leather cover
De Sede recommends dusting the leather regularly with a soft, slightly damp cotton cloth, not with microfibre. Cleaning and care are done over large areas from seam to seam; the product goes on the cloth, never directly on the leather. The fresher a stain, the easier it is to remove; for heavy soiling, a leather specialist can help. Protect the sofa from direct sunlight.
Why a De Sede DS 167 floor model?
De Sede started out as a saddlery workshop in Klingnau and has been making upholstered furniture since 1965. For this, the company works with international designers such as Hugo de Ruiter. A floor model has only been on display and never used in everyday life: you get the leather unused, and the patina will only develop in your home. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How can the backrest of the DS 167 be moved?
The backrest can be moved freely around the entire seat; a plastic plate bends into the necessary curves as you do so. This lets you decide where on the seat you lean back.
Why does the seat depth change on the DS 167?
Because the backrest is not fixed in one place but can be moved around the seat. Depending on where the backrest is, the seat is shallower or deeper – for sitting upright or for leaning back and relaxing.
How is the DS 167 upholstered?
The seat and back cushions consist of several layers of foam of different firmness. The core is made of extra-soft PU foam with a protective layer of wadding, topped by a soft, shape-retaining upholstery layer. According to de Sede, this ensures stability of shape and a pleasant feel.
What is the difference between the DS 167 and the DS-164 and DS-165?
The DS 167 is a further development of these two series. It is slimmer and more delicate and stands on slim feet of polished stainless steel. Its hallmark is the movable backrest.
Is the DS 167 also available for outdoor use?
Yes. De Sede now offers an outdoor version of the DS 167. Its base is made of stainless steel with a dip-coated finish. For indoor use, the series is available in leather and fabric versions.
What materials is the DS 167 available in?
De Sede makes the DS 167 in various leathers and fabrics from its own collection; custom designs are possible. The options include the leather qualities Living, Naturale, Select and Touch.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
De Sede goes back to a small upholstery workshop that Ernst Lüthy founded in Klingnau, Switzerland, in 1962; in 1965 it became de Sede AG. The company is known for handcrafted leather furniture, and its models carry numbers. For the DS-47 by the in-house design team, de Sede has used thick neck leather (NECK) since 1976; on Hugo de Ruiter's DS-167 the backrest slides around the entire seat. Mathias Hoffmann's DS-102 dates from 1998.
