About the model
De Sede DS 102 – a leather sofa with criss-cross lacing
Mathias Hoffmann designed the DS 102 for de Sede; the design dates from after 2000. Its hallmarks are the softly curved, organic shape that embraces the person sitting in it and criss-cross lacing in saddle leather along the edges. This detail recalls de Sede's origins in saddlery. Slim metal legs support the body, so the sofa seems to float slightly above the floor. De Sede still makes the model, now on feet of brushed aluminium with saddle leather caps.
DS 102 two-seater in black leather
This DS 102 is a two-seater with a black leather cover. With its compact width, it fits into city flats, studies or a reception area. The curved shape and the criss-cross lacing give the sofa a clear line from the side as well, so it does not have to stand against a wall. Black leather looks calm and timeless. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
De Sede describes the sofa as softly upholstered, with inviting shapes and cosy cushions. In the current version, a micro-spring core supports the seat, combined with foam in various firmnesses and cushions of down-like polyester fibres. With a seat height of 41 cm, you sit slightly lower than usual and in a relaxed position. The sofa needs around 1.64 m of wall space and 93 cm of depth; as a rule of thumb, leave 60 to 80 cm clear in front of it.
Elements and additions
De Sede also offers an armchair and a footstool with the same criss-cross lacing to go with the DS 102, and the sofa comes in several sizes. This lets you extend the two-seater into a seating group. De Sede specialist retailers can also arrange new covers, new padding and spare parts; according to the manufacturer, reupholstering is possible in many cases.
Caring for the leather cover
De Sede recommends dusting the whole sofa regularly with a soft, slightly damp cotton cloth; microfibre cloths are unsuitable. If your water is very hard, use boiled or distilled water. Never apply care products directly to the leather but to a cloth, and work over large areas from seam to seam. Solvents, stain removers, shoe polish and floor wax are off limits, and direct sunlight fades the colour.
Why buy a pre-owned De Sede DS 102?
De Sede started out as a saddlery workshop and has been making upholstered furniture in Klingnau in northern Switzerland since 1965. Today, more than 11,000 pieces of furniture are made there each year and exported to over 40 countries. On the DS 102, you can see this heritage in the lacing. Because de Sede still makes the model and offers reupholstering, the sofa can be used for a long time. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is special about the lacing on the DS 102?
Criss-cross lacing in saddle leather, worked by hand, runs along the edges. It emphasises the curved contour and points to de Sede's beginnings as a saddlery workshop.
How is the DS 102 upholstered?
In the current version, de Sede combines a seat with a micro-spring core and foams of different firmnesses. A casing of shape-retaining PU foam with wadding springs back into shape after pressure. The cushions are filled with down-like polyester fibres and upholstery beads.
Which leathers does de Sede offer for the DS 102?
De Sede currently lists several leather qualities from its own collection for the DS 102, including Living, Select, Touch, Naturale, Coloral and the nubuck leather Kaschmir. Custom designs are possible.
Can a DS 102 be reupholstered?
According to de Sede, reupholstering is possible in many cases. The manufacturer recommends renewing the padding at the same time, as it loses volume over the years. A photo of the piece helps the specialist retailer to prepare a non-binding quote.
How do you test a care product on the DS 102?
Try it on a hidden area first. Put the product on a clean, soft cloth and apply it gently from seam to seam. If the cloth picks up a lot of the leather's colour rather than dirt, the product is unsuitable, according to de Sede.
What tradition does the DS 102 come from?
De Sede started out as a saddlery workshop in Klingnau in northern Switzerland. Since 1965, the company has been making upholstered furniture, working with international designers such as Mathias Hoffmann.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
De Sede goes back to a small upholstery workshop that Ernst Lüthy founded in Klingnau, Switzerland, in 1962; in 1965 it became de Sede AG. The company is known for handcrafted leather furniture, and its models carry numbers. For the DS-47 by the in-house design team, de Sede has used thick neck leather (NECK) since 1976; on Hugo de Ruiter's DS-167 the backrest slides around the entire seat. Mathias Hoffmann's DS-102 dates from 1998.
