COR Mell – angular outside, round inside

Jehs+Laub designed the Mell for COR on a simple principle: angular outside, round inside. The outer shape is cubic and clean-cut, while on the inside the edges are softly rounded. The sofa stands on steel runners with rounded corners, so slender that it almost seems to float. Mell is the slightly firmer version of the Mell Lounge, without back cushions and with a shallower seat. COR sums it up like this: while you tend to sprawl on many other sofas, Mell likes things neat and tidy.

Mell 2.5-seater in black leather

This Mell is a 2.5-seater with a black leather cover – wider than a two-seater, narrower than a large three-seater. Thanks to its shallow depth, it also fits against shorter walls, in a study or in a reception area. Black leather and the slim runners give the sofa a calm, understated look. The upright seating position is good for conversation, reading and receiving guests. It is one of a kind.

Seating comfort and space

According to COR, Mell is firmer than the Mell Lounge, the seat is shallower and there are no back cushions. So you sit upright and well supported, just as you would want for conversation or reading. At 43 cm, the seat height is within the usual range. The sofa needs around 1.9 m of wall space and is only 72 cm deep – considerably less than many sofas. As a rule of thumb, leave 60 to 80 cm clear in front of it.

Elements and additions

Mell is modular: alongside sofas 160 and 190 cm wide, there is a connecting element, a footstool and a table, which can be combined into seating landscapes. To match, COR offers the Mell armchair with a high or low back, as well as the Mell and Mell C side tables. If you prefer a softer seat, the Mell Lounge has deeper seats with back cushions.

Caring for the leather cover

COR has a clear rule for leather: care for it gently, clean it rarely. Once a week, vacuum off the dust or wipe it away with a damp cloth. At least twice a year, clean the leather with a gentle cleaner and then apply a cream so that it stays supple. Stain removers, solvents and shoe polish damage it, as do proximity to a radiator and strong light.

Why buy a pre-owned COR Mell?

COR was founded in Rheda-Wiedenbrück in 1954 and still makes its furniture there by hand. The Mell belongs to a family of sofas, armchairs, footstools and tables by Jehs+Laub that COR still makes. Steel and leather are durable materials, and the cubic shape does not follow any trend. Leather develops a patina over time. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
