About the model
COR Conseta – the sofa built from elements
Friedrich Wilhelm Möller developed Conseta for COR in the early 1960s. A trained cabinetmaker and interior designer, he worked as a sales representative and knew what customers wanted from their seating. The name combines the Latin words con sedere, to sit together, and consetus, put together. Conseta is both a sofa range and a system of elements: seat, corner, end and lounger elements as well as footstools are joined with tabs and wedges. Working beneath the cover are a tenoned and dowelled solid beech frame, hardened steel sinuous springs and a reinforced seat edge.
Conseta three-seater in red leather with shelf – floor model
This Conseta is a three-seater with a leather cover in a dark red reminiscent of Bordeaux. The sofa comes with a shelf that has room for a book, a cup or the remote control. The piece was on display and has never been used in a home. With three seats, it suits a living room, a library or a reception area. The strong red adds an accent against light walls and wood.
Seating comfort and space
How firmly you sit on the Conseta depends on the cushion filling. COR offers five versions, from a firm cushion with a spring core to softer cold foam wrapped in visco foam. Underneath, hardened steel sinuous springs provide the suspension. With a seat height of 45 cm, you sit within the usual range. The sofa needs around 2.35 m of wall space and is 87 cm deep. As a rule of thumb, leave 60 to 80 cm of walkway clear in front of it.
Elements and additions
Conseta grows with you: because COR joins the elements with tabs and wedges, sofas can be extended, rearranged or made smaller. The range includes footstools, a lounger element with a 120 cm wide cushion, a footrest and a headrest that can be folded in at the side and tilted. Conseta is also available as a sofa bed. As COR still makes the range, you can enquire about matching elements at a COR specialist retailer.
Caring for the leather cover
COR advises caring for leather gently and cleaning it only rarely. Once a week, vacuum off the dust or wipe it up with a damp cloth. At least twice a year, clean the leather with a mild cleaner and then protect it with a care cream. Stain removers, solvents and shoe polish are off limits, as are proximity to a radiator and direct sunlight. The cover is held in place with tuck-in piping and can be removed.
Why a COR Conseta floor model?
The family business COR has been based in Rheda-Wiedenbrück in East Westphalia since 1954. Conseta was one of the company's first ranges, and COR calls it the heart of its history. A floor model has only been on display and has never been used in a home – you will be the first to live with it. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
How is a Conseta built?
The frame is made of solid beech rails that are tenoned and dowelled. On top are specially hardened steel sinuous springs; the seat edge is reinforced and the back is made of hardboard panels. The backrest is padded at the top, and the seat cushions are reversible.
What cushion fillings are available for the Conseta?
COR offers five fillings. Polyether with a Bonnell spring core gives a firm, taut seat, while a high-density polyether combination is slightly softer. Cold foam wrapped in visco foam is softer than polyether. The filling of air-cell sticks around a cold foam core needs plumping up from time to time.
What does the PolyPLUS back cushion do on the Conseta?
It reduces the seat depth by 3 cm so that you sit more upright. The core is made of polyether and is filled with air-cell sticks. According to COR, the cushion keeps its shape yet still offers softer comfort.
How are the Conseta elements joined?
With fittings based on the tab-and-wedge principle. To join them, place two elements close together, lift them slightly at the same time and lower them evenly; the fittings then engage. Lifting them again releases the connection.
Is the Conseta also available as a sofa bed?
Yes. The sofa bed has a low base close to the floor, 87 or 97 cm deep. When unfolded, it becomes a guest bed in seconds, with a 155 by 200 cm sleeping area and a folding cold foam mattress. The back cushions stay in place and give you support while reading.
How did the Conseta come about?
As a COR sales representative, Friedrich Wilhelm Möller knew what customers wanted and used this to develop a range of elements. At the 1964 trade fair, it was initially a flop. A year later, the upholstery was softer and the armrests wider – after that, its success grew.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
COR was founded in 1954 in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and is still run by the founding Lübke family; the name is the Latin word for heart. Every piece is assembled and tested there. Friedrich Wilhelm Möller's Conseta dates from 1964 and is an add-on system of elements in various widths with a choice of armrests. The Trio by Team Form AG, from the early 1970s, is built from three basic elements, and the Mell was designed by the studio Jehs+Laub.
