About the model
COR Avalanche – sofa with adjustable back
The Milan-based studio Metrica designed the Avalanche for COR, and it was presented in 2019. Generous upholstered surfaces rest on a delicately upholstered frame and a solid base that is raised off the floor. The slightly concave back cushion is reinforced in the lumbar area. It can be tilted and raised, from an upright sitting position to a horizontal lying surface. COR calls the sofa versatile, elegant and finely thought out in its functions. At its presentation in Milan, it was described as being for sitting, lying, relaxing and dreaming.
Avalanche three-seater in grey fabric with footstool
This Avalanche is a three-seater with a grey fabric cover, and it comes with a matching footstool. Because it is raised off the floor, the large upholstered body looks lighter than it is. Grey goes well with wood, metal and colourful cushions and lets the shape speak for itself. The sofa suits living spaces where it is used for sitting as well as for reading and stretching out. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
At 41 cm, the seat height is slightly lower than usual, so you sit in a rather relaxed way. The back cushion, reinforced in the lumbar area, gives support when you sit upright. The sofa needs around 2.15 m of wall space and just over a metre of depth, and with the back raised it measures 1.06 m in height. The footstool is just over half a metre deep. If it stands in front of the sofa, around 60 to 80 cm of walking space should remain next to it.
Functions and additions
When raised, the back cushion supports your head and shoulders; tilted flat, it creates a horizontal lying surface, and with an extra cushion a daybed. According to COR, adjusting it is effortless: for the lying position, you simply change the angle of inclination. Loose cushions and bolsters were also part of the range. The family also included armchairs and a Love Chair for two people.
Caring for the fabric cover
Vacuum the fabric regularly with a soft upholstery nozzle, including along seams and edges. This stops dust from settling into the weave. Dab fresh stains immediately without rubbing. Direct sunlight can bleach fabrics, so do not place the sofa permanently in bright light. For a thorough clean, an upholstery specialist is the right place to go.
Why buy a pre-owned COR Avalanche?
COR was founded in Rheda-Wiedenbrück in 1954 and is still owner-managed today; its upholstered furniture is made there with traditional craftsmanship. As a 2019 design, the Avalanche is still young. Generous upholstery on a solid base, an adjustable back and the matching footstool make the sofa versatile, from a place for conversation to a lounger. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the idea behind the Avalanche?
COR presented the Avalanche in 2019 as furniture for living in zones rather than in fixed, clearly defined rooms. The sofa is meant to adapt: to sitting upright, talking, leaning back or reading stretched out. The idea is that the furniture can be rearranged as needed.
Which rooms is the Avalanche suited to?
According to the trade press, it works well in open spaces, both at home and in public areas. With the back raised, it creates a sheltered seating nook; lowered, the sofa looks open and inviting. The base, raised off the floor, keeps it from looking bulky.
What is the wooden element on the Avalanche for?
COR developed a rotating element in finely crafted solid wood for the Avalanche. Depending on its position, it serves as a shelf, a tray or even a backrest. It was one of the features of the Avalanche family.
Which pieces belonged to the Avalanche family?
The family included sofas from 175 to 235 cm wide, an armchair and a smaller armchair version. For two people, there was the Love Chair, a special armchair 105 cm wide. There was also a footstool or pouffe, plus loose cushions and bolsters.
What is the footstool of the Avalanche for?
According to COR, a footstool or pouffe increases comfort in every sitting and lying position. If you want to put your feet up, place the footstool in front of the sofa; when you have visitors, it becomes an extra seat. This sofa comes with a footstool.
What should you do about a stain on the Avalanche’s fabric cover?
Dab fresh stains immediately with a light-coloured, absorbent cloth, working from the outside in and without rubbing. Use only a little water so that no watermark forms. For stubborn stains, professional upholstery cleaning by a specialist is the safe option.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
COR was founded in 1954 in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and is still run by the founding Lübke family; the name is the Latin word for heart. Every piece is assembled and tested there. Friedrich Wilhelm Möller's Conseta dates from 1964 and is an add-on system of elements in various widths with a choice of armrests. The Trio by Team Form AG, from the early 1970s, is built from three basic elements, and the Mell was designed by the studio Jehs+Laub.
