About the model
Rolf Benz Scala – modular sofa by Gino Carollo
Gino Carollo designed the Scala for Rolf Benz, and the series was launched at the Milan furniture fair in 2012. Scala was a modular system of stand-alone sofas, add-on and corner elements, benches and an upholstered bench, with a headrest on request. The seat frame, body and back cushions could be upholstered separately in different colours and materials. The sofa is built on a wooden inner frame with spring core suspension. The polyurethane foam seat has a chambered, down-like topper. It stands on cast feet, either polished or lacquered.
Scala two-seater in black leather
This Scala is a two-seater with a leather cover in black. Black leather has a clean look and suits modern and classic interiors alike. The two-seater seats two people and suits a living room, reading room, office or reception area. The Scala system also included an upholstered bench and armchairs, with which it can be extended into a seating group. It is one of a kind.
Seating comfort and space
Rolf Benz gives a seat depth of 60 cm for the Scala sofas. That is enough to sit in a relaxed way without the backrest moving out of reach. The spring core gives elastically, and the down-like topper makes the surface soft. The series was available with a seat height of 41 or 44 cm, both within the usual range. The sofa takes up two metres of wall and 90 cm in depth; leave 60 to 80 cm clear in front of it.
Elements and additions
The Scala was conceived as a system. Besides stand-alone sofas in four widths, there were add-on and corner elements, add-on sofas, end armchairs with and without an upholstered seat, an upholstered corner piece and an upholstered bench. There was also a headrest for the backrest and back cushions in several widths. The Scala is no longer listed on the current Rolf Benz website. Rolf Benz offers a reupholstery service through its retail partners.
Caring for the leather cover
Remove dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Rolf Benz recommends treating leather with a suitable care product at least every six months to keep it supple. Dab up liquids straight away, without rubbing. Do not place the sofa right next to radiators or in full sunlight, otherwise the leather will dry out.
Why buy a pre-owned Rolf Benz Scala?
Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture since 1964; the company was founded in Nagold in the Black Forest. The Scala relies on classic upholstery techniques with a wooden inner frame and spring core. According to Rolf Benz, its foams meet and often exceed the density requirements of the German Furniture Quality Association. Over time, leather develops a patina of its own. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean that the Scala is a modular system?
The Scala consisted of individual elements: stand-alone sofas, add-on and corner elements, benches, armchairs and an upholstered bench. These can be put together to form straight sofas and corner groups. All the elements share the same upholstery construction and the same feet, so they match each other.
Can the Scala be upholstered in more than one colour?
Yes. When ordering, the seat frame, body and back cushions could be upholstered separately in different colours and materials. This made it possible to design a Scala in two colours or two cover materials, such as leather with fabric cushions.
How is the Scala upholstered?
A wooden inner frame with spring core suspension supports the polyurethane foam seat. On top is a chambered, down-like topper filled with foam sticks and polyester fibres. The back has a foam layer, its cover is quilted onto polyester fleece, and the cushions also have a down-like feel.
What is the Scala's headrest for?
The headrest extends the backrest upwards, so your head is supported too when you lean back. Rolf Benz offered it as a separate element in the Scala system. This is handy if you read or watch TV on the sofa.
What feet does the Scala have?
The Scala stands on cast feet. Rolf Benz offered them polished or lacquered in grey-brown, shade RAL 8019. The feet lift the sofa off the floor and make it look lighter than a sofa with a closed base.
Can the Scala be reupholstered?
Yes. Rolf Benz offers a reupholstery service for its upholstered furniture, handled through a retail partner. The manufacturer assesses the piece based on the documents submitted, prepares an individual quote for each job, and renews parts subject to wear and, if necessary, the foams.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Hamburg. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
