About the model
Rolf Benz 318 Linea – straight shape, relaxed upholstery
With the 318 Linea, Rolf Benz relies on clean, straight lines and a relaxed upholstery construction. The range was available in two seat depths and two seat heights. In the extra-deep version, optional low back cushions provided additional support – even in a different material or shade. The Linea is built on an inner wooden frame with sinuous springs. The series included sofas, corner solutions, an armchair, an upholstered bench and a footstool. The feet came as metal runners or as tapered wooden feet.
Rolf Benz 318 Linea three-seater in grey fabric with footstool
This 318 Linea is a three-seater with a grey fabric cover, and it comes with a footstool. The footstool serves as a footrest in front of the sofa, as an extra seat or, placed freely in the room, as a surface for a tray. The grey is understated and suits both modern and classic rooms. Thanks to its compact width, the ensemble also fits into smaller living rooms. With the footstool in front, the sofa becomes a place to lie down in the evening.
Seating comfort and space
The upholstery is relaxed, so you sink pleasantly into the cushioning. The seat height of 41 cm is just below the usual range of 42 to 45 cm. The sofa needs around 1.7 m of wall space and a depth of 82 cm. The footstool is just under a metre wide and around 60 cm deep. Placed in front of the sofa, it needs extra space, and there should still be walking space in front of it.
Elements and additions
The Linea range included sofas in four widths, add-on sofas, end armchairs with a fixed upholstered seat, an armchair, an upholstered bench and a footstool. An additional back cushion was also available. Rolf Benz no longer offers the Linea. Worth knowing for the future: the manufacturer offers a reupholstery service, which also replaces the foam if necessary. This is arranged through specialist retailers.
Caring for the fabric cover
Vacuum the fabric about once a month with the upholstery nozzle on low suction, as Rolf Benz advises. In between, freshen it up with a damp, soft chamois leather. Dab stains immediately from the edge towards the centre, without rubbing. Do not use steam cleaners. After sitting, smooth the cover from the inside outwards.
Why buy a pre-owned Rolf Benz 318 Linea?
Rolf Benz has been making upholstered furniture since 1964, having been founded in Nagold in the Black Forest. With the Linea, the quality lies beneath the cover: an inner wooden frame, sinuous springs and carefully matched layers of foam. Rolf Benz says it uses high-density foams so that the seating comfort lasts for many years. The simple shape will also fit into a future interior. This piece has been inspected in eight stations.
Frequently asked questions
What seating comfort does the 318 Linea offer?
The seat was available as ‘Classic’, made of layered polyurethane foam, or as ‘Lounge plus’, made of cold foam. Both versions have relaxed upholstery, so you sit in the cushioning rather than on it. Underneath, sinuous springs provide the suspension.
Why do you sink in slightly on the 318 Linea?
Rolf Benz uses relaxed upholstery: the cover sits loosely around the cushioning so that you sink into the seat. According to the manufacturer, there is no taut upholstery in the collection. That is why you should plump up the cushions from time to time and smooth the cover.
What does the ‘quilted backing’ on the 318 Linea mean?
On the inside, the Linea cover is quilted to a layer of polyester fleece. The fleece sits between the foam and the cover. According to Rolf Benz, it ensures that the cover stretches evenly and drapes softly around the cushioning.
What does the 318 Linea stand on?
Depending on the version, on metal runners in stainless steel or black lacquer, or on tapered wooden feet in oak, black-pigmented oak or American walnut. This allowed the sofa to be matched to the floor and the other furniture.
Can Rolf Benz reupholster the 318 Linea?
Yes, in most cases. The manufacturer calculates the cost of each reupholstery job individually and carries it out itself, following its own standards for cutting, sewing and upholstering. Your point of contact is a Rolf Benz dealer, and the service is available in the EU and Switzerland.
How do you care for a 318 Linea with a fabric cover?
Brush the fabric with a soft brush. For stains, work over a large area from seam to seam and soak up the liquid with an absorbent white cloth. Household cleaners containing solvents are unsuitable.
Can I see the piece before buying?
Yes – the piece is at Warehouse Cologne. Viewing by appointment, or alternatively by video call.
Rolf Benz was founded in 1964 by the upholsterer Rolf Benz in Nagold. His first range, Addiform, consisted of elements that could be combined freely into a seating landscape. Well-known models include the Plura by Norbert Beck, with a steplessly adjustable back, and the Nova by Joachim Nees, whose back opens out into a reclining position. The furniture is made largely by hand in two company-owned factories in the northern Black Forest; every sofa undergoes a final inspection.
